House fire

Well tonight sucked the big one. Somehow my electric smoker caught my porch on fire and it got to the exterior wall to my dining room. Luckily I live really close to a fire house so it was handled incredibly quickly.

Does anyone here happen to have any experience in this kind of situation or advice?

Here's some pics for reference 0229202013f.jpg

The sucks man. I hope everything gets worked out.

I don't have nay experience. A guy I worked with had some serious fire damage and he ended up making out like a bandit through the insurance. Made significant upgrades to his house and had cash left over when it was all said and done.

Ya one of my good friends from high school had his home burn down. He had to live in a hotel for 13 months but now he has a brand new house. He said he is thankful for the fire in the end as he made out like a bandit as well.

I feel like all things considered it's not nearly as bad as it could have been. Fire didn't get inside the house, just some water damage from it being put out, they let us back in within a couple hours of it happening.

Still would be awesome if I end up coming out ahead though. I did need a new porch anyway lol.

First problem: electric smoker. Charcoal is way better. Pellet grill maybe, but charcoal is where it's at.

Sorry to hear that bro. That just sucks. My daughter wrecked my wife's new car a month ago and that was bad enough. Couldn't imagine this. Hope it turns out alright.

Not some water damage. Lots of water damage. LOTS!

Oh man that must have been frightening. Glad the outcome wasn't worse.

I worked with a lady who lost her condo to a fire. She admonished everyone in our office to take videos of your belongongs and to make lists. She thought she had lost thousands of dollars because in her moment of distress following the fire she did not list everything. The insurance company quickly paid her out, and not surprisingly thwy were far less responsive after their first payput. She did eventually get some more out of them but not nearly enough to replace what she lost.

If your insurance works like hers she'd probably tell you to tell the insurance company everything you lost. Get a notebook or spreadsheet and start writing. Take pictures of ruined items. Don't forget the small items they add up. For instance, don't just list electric smoker. Include extension cord, meat thermometer, smoker blanket, salt shaker, meat fork etc....everything that was actually lost or damaged.

Oooh hat's a good call thanks, at first blush I was thinking there was not really much of my personal stuff that got damaged, but there really is quite a lot covered in soggy ash in my dining room, not to mention the smoke.

Don't try to clean it up until you get your picturesand have talked to your insurance. Call your insurance asap. Ask them their process for engaging a Disaster Cleanup company. If they have you select a company you're gonna need to get busy today so you can make it to work Monday.

You got to get that house sealed up, its still winter in Utah.

I called my insurance company as soon as I was allowed back inside. They referred me to a cleanup company but the closest is 60 miles away so it's looking like they won't be able to come take a look until Tuesday. I'm in Wyoming and yeah, definitely still a lot of winter to go.

That sucks man, good thing it stayed outside. The only encounter I’ve had with fire in the house was back in Spain when I was cooking and the whole stove area caught on fire. I could put it out myself but boy it sucked.

I’m sorry man. I hope the repairs happen soon and everything goes well. When’s the insurance guy coming?

Insurance seems to be awesome. Weird what happens when a group of people band together to defray costs and help people bounce back from unforeseen accidents.

Last year, a fire in my neighbor’s yard torched up the side of my garage. The insurance was nightmare. Careful documentation is crucial.
