Morning all.
The CBA allows for exisiting contracts to be renegotiated and extended when 3 years have passed since the contract was signed. Derrick Favors agreed to his contract extension on October 18th 2013. This means that he will be eligile for a renegotiation in this upcoming preseason. Derrick has a very team friendly contract. With the salary cap going up substantially, we could offer him to renegotiate his deal to give him more money over the next two years than his current deal gives him, if he agrees to extend it. For example, we could offer him a 4 years 70 million contract, which spread out evenly would give him 10 million more over the next two years than he originally is due.
The upside for Derrick is more guaranteed money at an earlier stage. The upside for the Jazz is that we would have a core player locked up for 4 years. The downside for us is that our cap space would decline with about 5 million. But, does that really matter? We already have tons of cap space and unless KD wants to come here, who better to use the money on than Derrick Favors?
