How about we offer Derrick Favors an early extension?

Morning all.

The CBA allows for exisiting contracts to be renegotiated and extended when 3 years have passed since the contract was signed. Derrick Favors agreed to his contract extension on October 18th 2013. This means that he will be eligile for a renegotiation in this upcoming preseason. Derrick has a very team friendly contract. With the salary cap going up substantially, we could offer him to renegotiate his deal to give him more money over the next two years than his current deal gives him, if he agrees to extend it. For example, we could offer him a 4 years 70 million contract, which spread out evenly would give him 10 million more over the next two years than he originally is due.

The upside for Derrick is more guaranteed money at an earlier stage. The upside for the Jazz is that we would have a core player locked up for 4 years. The downside for us is that our cap space would decline with about 5 million. But, does that really matter? We already have tons of cap space and unless KD wants to come here, who better to use the money on than Derrick Favors?

Althoug I think Favors' ceiling is "only" borderline all-star, extending him doesn't seem like a bad idea. It remains to be seem, though, what is the actual prognosis on his ailing back. Will he be basically fine from now on or the Jazz can expect him to miss 10-20 games each season?

I think that is a GREAT idea. It also shows him that we see him as part of our longer plan.

Favors seems like the kinda guy who wants to stick to a team for the rest of his career, he seems loyal, let's make it happen.

I like this idea... but worry about his back issues.

He runs the floor like Frankenstein. Looks like he is always in pain

I believe this is the plan... Has been floated by Locke and Andy Larsen. Denver did it with Gallo and chandler last year. If we can get a small discount on the backend it makes all kinds of sense.

If you look at our contracts we have 6 players potentially up in either RFA or UFA in that contract year. Hayward, Favors, Hood, Exum, Neto, and Pleiss. We'll see if Neto and Pleiss make it that far, but Hayward, Favors, Hood, and Exum certainly will.

Jumping the gun and re-upping Favs now relinquishes a lot of flexibility and could put the Jazz in a tough spot.

Not really. If we get to 2018 with Favors as a UFA, his cap hold will be just under 18 million. Every dollar we sign him up for on an exension below this, gives us more room under the cap to work with. We could obviously choose to just let him go in 2018 and get another 12 million or so in cap space, but something really, really bad has to happen for that to be an option.

If we pay a little more now when we have cap space in spades it will save us on the backend and we actually have more flexibility. It also makes him a better trade asset. This makes sense for both parties and I expect it gets done.

Sounds like Davis is out for the Olympic team this year. That leaves a chance for Favors to make it. If he plays on the US team and does well, which he will. That will increase his value. Offer him what he wants now. He wants to be here long term. We want him long term. His value is going to increase and the cap will increase so the sooner we sign him the better. Also I think Favors has played better the more comfortable he is with his situation. He played much better after his last contract. He likes having the front office support him and make him feel comfortable. Plus he is easy to trade if we need to in the future. He is young two way player that every team in the NBA wants.

I really doubt he signs for under $18M. He's one of the top 2-way bigs in the league. He's eligible for a 30% contracts. Not saying he's a max player and will get that much, but some team with cap space could offer him $25M or more. He's the perfect 5 with the way the league is evolving. I'd say getting him for under $25M/per should be considered a real bargain. And I'm saying this with the mindset of a cap at $100M+.

I do like the idea of giving him more sooner. Jazz are going to need all the cap room they can get in '18/'19, unless Hayward leaves. If Favors would agree to say, $20M/per, that might set an example for Gordon. Maybe Hayward would also give the Jazz a discount to keep the team together when he opts out.

Hey Locke read your question on his podcast today, right?

Non rookie extensions were all but killed off in the last CBA. Kind of surprised a guy like Locke who usually is up to speed doesn't know this.

This is not an extension. It's a renegotiate then extended. It's from the new CBA.

Derrick is not eligible for 30% of the cap until after next season, when he has 7 years of service in the league. With his current contract, he is scheduled to make $23 million combined over the next two years. If he lets the contract run out and gets a max contract in 2018, he will make 30 million in 2018 in 32 million in 2019, with the cap predicted to be at $100 million when his contract runs out. Over these four years, he will then make around $85 million. Now, if we were willing to give him the max now, he would make 22 and a quarter next year with the salary cap set to be about $89 million and him being eligible for 25% of the cap. Hit 7,5% raises, he would make $99 million over the next 4 years, $14 million more than he can maximally make if he opts for free agency in 2018.

With the new CBA, we can offer up to £23 million more to Derrick over the next 2 years than what he is earning under his current contract. I guess for him the question is if he wants more money now or gamble on him being a healthy max player in 2018. Even if he is, he would still have to make up the difference on that contract compared to the last two he will get on an extension now and the contract he can sign in 2020 as a free agent.
