What's new

It's the most wonderful time of the year (first game of the year!). Hou @ Jazz Game 1 of many.

I was at the game and just got home. I noticed a few things I liked and a few things I didn't like
Burks played pretty good defense against harden. Some of hardens shots just went in even with burks playing solid D. His improvement is nice
Booker is an animal. His hustle was awesome and he played pretty good defense. I like him a lot
Gobert played great. He has improved tons from last year. Huge steal in the draft. His box score doesn't reflect how good he was
Favors showed an improved jump shot too

I didn't like
Kanters defense. He got beat on the 3 point line a few times and Howard worked him early on(although part of it was Howard being a beast)
Burke seemed to play some hero ball, some possessions not passing it at all. He got trapped a lot in the first half but did much better in the second
Hayward really seemed to be tuned out of the game. His jump shot was off and he really didn't do anything to help take over the game. Really frustrated with his game

Much better than last year though. The crowd was super into it and the team looks better. Houston is a good team

Also was glad to see offensive fouls called in harden

wah?

He's not getting MUCH less. So his raises are 4.5% instead of 7% (or something like that).
OK, our "almost max" player shot like he almost knew where the basket was. Better?

The point is he got a max for a 0-6 year guy not the league max. James is a "max player". Will Hayward ever get a league max contract? NO. So he's not a max player. Just like Anthony Bennet isn't a max player just because he was picked #1 and has a max rookie contract.

Did we overpay? yep
Did we have a choice? not really
Is the incessant whining about it dumb? yep

Hayward had a great game other than shooting and scoring?

Wow.

The theater was fantastic other than Lincoln being assassinated.

I don't give a damn how many assists he has, max players have got to be able to shoot and score. The hayward cheerleaders are taking homerism to a new level. Not even Locke and Checkettes are deepthroating the way some of you are.

Now, kanter sucked and honestly might not be an effective NBA player. A poor man's Jefferson will never amount to a winning team.

The offense looked good tonight. We manufactured a lot of easy buckets and open shots. I wish we would continue to feed Favors. Booker is Millsap II. I'd like to see what Novak can do. Burks/Burke, when playing well, leave little time for Exum. It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out this year.

Overall, Houston went small and just burned us. They're a tough team. We needed a wing to somewhat match them. Hayward was the guy. He failed. I so would rather have Parsons over Hayward. Or hell, Ariza. Ariza had 20 pts.

At least we're playing a more exciting brand of basketball.

I can think of one player who seemed to manufacture a lot of easy buckets and open shots..

Why do you or anyone else think that. He looks so bad taking them. I just don't see it at all.

This... There is no evidence he can shoot the 3... None.

I don't blame him for the loss though... He played good in the first half. Trey and Hayward's bricks were much more to blame. The good news is they won't shoot that bad every night.

It was a long shot to think Kanter could just start hitting threes. Blake is a better jump shooter than Kanter and even he can't hit them regularly. Millsap didn't start shooting them regularly until last year and only hit them at 35.8% which is barely passable.

Millsap hit some big 3's for Utah, but really wasn't allowed to shoot them. There is ZERO doubt Paul had better range entering his 4th year than Enes does. Kanter is an inside player. That's where he scored from tonight. I think he did a passable job, but the offense bogged down without having 4 players who could surround the arc and be outside threats. The Jazz need a PF who can hit the 3. And then I think the choice comes down to who backs up Favors: is it Gobert or Kanter going forward? I know what my answer is.

I mean, this game really came down to the fact the Howard and Harden were the most talented players on the court. Howard looks like he is going to have a monster season and although we prevented Harden from hurting us too much himself, his drive and kicks killed us.

Our runs typically happened without them on the court and when we had our best players on the court.

The Rockets are a better team and have better players at the top.

The point is he got a max for a 0-6 year guy not the league max. James is a "max player". Will Hayward ever get a league max contract? NO. So he's not a max player. Just like Anthony Bennet isn't a max player just because he was picked #1 and has a max rookie contract.

Bloody hell. You sound like Bill Clinton arguing over what the definition of "is" is. Under your definition next year Lebron won't be a max player because the cap will have gone up and his contract will no longer be at 30% of BRI. Utah DID have a choice with Gordon, just like Houston had a choice with Parsons. They could have said "see ya later" and turned to a FA whose contribution would have been better value on the dollar.

But as Ty would have said, it's only one game. We can see if Gordon "overpaid but not at heyhey's definition of a max deal" Hayward comes close to producing stats that in any way justify his $16M salary. I won't hold my breath.

Funny how all the Hayward haters are coming out of the wood works after he has one bad offensive performance and where completely silent the entire preseason.

I'm not a hater by any means, although I still believe he is considerably overpaid, and that for Utah, the contract was a mistake. However, I just wanted to point out that most reasonable fans understand that preseason adds up to exactly jack squat when trying to evaluate pretty much anything.

Having said all that, the Gordo lovers/defenders better come to grips in a hurry as to what is expected from him by the majority of fans after signing that contract. I expect him to be basically the same player he was last year, and even though that might fly if the Jazz are winning, he is going to get absolutely HAMMERED by this fan base if the team is losing, and he shows little/no improvement from last year.

In reality, I feel kinda bad for him because I really can't blame him for taking what was offered, but the situation is what it is, and with obscene amounts of money come greater expectations. Much as I hate to say it, Gordo is set up perfectly to become the next hated player on the team. The Taylor Swifts of Jazzfanz should just add him right now to your list of jerks who were mean and stupid and never let you drive their truck.

I did see some improvements from Hayward tonight. He only made 3 shots, but they way he made those 3 shots were encouraging.

1. Looks like he can finish at the rim better now due to his stronger build. (one dunk, one layup he muscled in)
2. He made a floater. (one more than he made all last season) Hopefully he added this to his offensive repertoire.

He still sucks shooting wide open threes like last season doe...
