What's new

Jazz back in talks with Josh Howard

I am not. He is injury prone, shoots 39% from the floor and 25% from three. He doesn't do anything well.

I believe he does well at getting minutes and starts.

I thought I heard Carrol's signing was never a done deal. Maybe Carrol is gone.

still... hayward/marvin/burks/foye/murph. if howard's here, then most likely only one of those 5 can start and only 2 others get rotation minutes. so who do we just not use? foye and murph? or do we keep burks on the shelf for another year? will marvin/gordon develop like we hope if they're not starting?

i'm usually the guy spouting the "depth is never a bad thing" line, but howard makes absolutely no sense here.

That makes ZERO sense. The way it works now:

SG: Hayward 20 mpg, Burks 18 mpg, Foye 10 mpg
SF: Williams 30 mpg, Hayward 12 mpg, Carroll 6 mpg

This is already a weird *** rotation with Foye being somewhat redundant, Burks getting fewer minutes than ideal, the new rookie only getting garbage minutes, and Carroll getting a couple of minutes here and there if lucky. Giving Howard ANY play time would mean Hayward spending more time at the 2, ensuring that either Foye does not get to play, or Burks getting very few minutes. All of this for an atrocious player who shouldn't still be playing anyway.

Think about what you're doing for ****'s sake!

Mo (28), Tinsley (5), Watson (5), Burks (5), Foye (5)
Hayward (21), Burks (17), Foye (10)
Williams (25), Hayward (8), Howard (6), Carroll (6), Millsap (3)
Millsap (26), Favors (18), Evans (4)
Jefferson (27), Favors (10), Kanter (11)

If we did sign Howard, this was my attempt to show a distribution of minutes that would be seemingly fair and piss the players and fans as little as possible. Keep in mind, due to DNP's or guys simply not getting their number called many games, these minutes played numbers would go up across the board on a per game played basis making their minutes grow. For instance, it's highly unlikely that all four "points" play in the same game very often. Therefore, in a game where Watson does not play, Mo may get more like 30 minutes, Tinsley 10, and Burks 8.

Once I got down to Kanter though, it got tougher.

If Howard is just a bench reserve, he is a good player to have. He has experience, so he can step up if someone gets injured and provide minutes, or even start if needed.

My first thought is: Dang, I guess my boy Ahearn isn't coming back.

Second thought is: See ya later Burks. Hope you and Big Al love Atlanta (or Philly, Charlotte, Sacramento, Houston......)

Third thought is: I wonder why KOC waited until after all his big offseason moves to higher Mr. Analytics? And what does Mr. Analytics think of Big Al and last years draft?

Maybe they weren't thrilled with Burks' pre-season. Other than scoring, he wasn't exactly impressive, right? From a passing, rebounding, defensive perspective I mean...

Burks actually rebounded pretty well and wasn't too bad passing.

I remember one game when he had 22 points, 7 board, and 5 assists in just over 20 minutes.

Plus he mad alot of good passes and then his teammates missed open shots.

It was sarcasm. But I don't think it's the worst thing in the world as long as we aren't always being used as his rehab center like it seemed we always were last year. He was always back from something. Injuries, a floundering career, whatever. Like Torbin said, if he's one of your deep bench guys and doesn't get all Raja about it, it's not so bad. As long as Corbin can throw him right back on the bench at will. Then again, sometimes you just don't want to give certain coaches the option.

Personally, I'd rather take a shot on Terrence Williams or somebody like that if we're just talking end of the bench guy that could play spot minutes at the 2 and 3. His body is at least physically well.

I think you need to take about 5 minutes away from Hayward and give them to Foye.

A 15 man rotation where a bunch of player are getting a few minutes each? Um... no.

I'd be shocked and dismayed if the FO didn't have high expectation and specific plans for Burks. He has skills that nobody else on the squad can duplicate. When the offseason started (and we still had Harris) I was thinking maybe he'd play about 20 min/game this upcoming year. Now that we don't have a single driver besides him, I think he's got to play at least 25 min/game.

Foye can get minutes at the 1, and so can Burks, but there is no place for Howard. I don't understand this.
