Jeopardy Question

It's pretty sad when a career 36% 3pt shooter is scared to take 3's when his coach has been publicly wishing for him to take more 3's.

Again, can we please stop with the whole "well Burks has been playing good". That isn't the topic at hand. The topic is our floor spacing is **** and we have a guard who won't take 3 pointers. Those two things are kind of big deals and Alec taking some 3's would help out. It's not like the dude is ****ing Rajon Rondo.

Not ignoring your point, just saying there is value in what he does. He shot .38 from 3 last year. I'm pretty sure he'll take his share.

Would it be good for him to go 1-3 from three each game and not get to the line or the rim very much?

He is not getting very many shots per game (less than hayward, favors, burke, and hood) so if he starts taking more threes then that means he takes less shots at the rim and less free throw attempts. Is that a good thing? (I honestly don't know)

Why should we expect a career 36% shooter who has improved his shooting nearly every year to only go 1/3 every game? It's not an insane thing to ask someone to increase their volume for the good of the team. The point is if he takes them teams have to guard him. He isn't going to be bricking in the low 30's if his career plays out like it has been.

If Burks can't take at least two 3 pointers a game, he has no business playing alongside Favors/Gobert in the starting lineup. Those are just plain facts and I fear we may go on an early slide if we continue with the formula of starting two non-spacing bigs and a 2-guard who won't take a 3 point shot.

Then explain to me why he refuses to take his open 3's so far while his coach urges him to take more?

I agree he has to shoot the rock. It's bad enough we have 2 pg's that can't shoot if they wanted to. He really can't pass up the 3.

Let's use tonight as an example.
Burks took 7 shots and made three. Burks scored 14 points on those 7 shots. On one of his misses rudy got an easy put back dunk (2 points). On another miss favors got the rebound and scored and got fouled (3 points). Both of the buckets were caused by Burks attacking the rim.

So on 7 shots there were 19 points created.

Let's say he takes 3 three point shots tonight and makes one. And take away three of his drives (there are only a certain amount of shots/possesions to go around after all)

Does that help the team win? Maybe. Do the opponents fear his three point shot if he takes more of them? I'm not sure anyone is afraid of Burks if he takes more threes..... Not sure it would even help spacing anyway. Burks is no bradley beal, klay, rodney or even Gordon.
Teams might still clog the paint against the jazz if Burks shoots more threes except now we would also be letting them off the hook from having to defend what he is truly good at.

Then explain to me why he refuses to take his open 3's so far while his coach urges him to take more?

Burks has always seemed very coachable to me. Maybe quin has been happy with Burks play so far this year

I had this lengthy argument with someone, I think it might actually have been fishionjazz, last offseason. Burks has to take 3s, he isn't Dwayne Wade. It will open up his game, open up the offense, and ironically put more pressure on the defense.

Obviously it wouldn't make sense to force 3s for the sake of taking 3s, but if you have been watching this season you can see the open looks he passes up.

Some real deep statistical analysis right there.

Why does anyone shoot 3 pointers? Why? Really we should only allow Hood and Hayward to shoot 3's. That way none of our not great shooters will waste shots on a shot they might miss. I mean who cares about stretching defense and keeping them honest to your perimeter players. I mean, big men don't need space on the interior to receive passes and dive to the rim, just let Burks man just dig in to the paint, no big deal.

No idea. You'd have to ask Burks. I'd guess though that he's working his way back from the injury and he's more comfortable at this stage going to the rim. He hasn't played in a while. The outside shooting will come. I'm not really worried about it.

The Jazz also want Burks looking for his jump shot, too, and at one point in the game Snyder made his way down to the end of the bench to tell his shooting guard he needed to take a three-pointer.

Burks shot 42.9 percent on catch-and-shoot three-pointers last year, and Snyder wants to see the guard, a natural slasher, be on that end of drive-and-kicks a little more often this year.

.

So out of the 4 3point shots Burks has taken this pre-season, Quin had to literally yell at Burks for one of them. I think one of the other ones was at a half-time buzzer.
