Jeremy Evans

A minor topic in the broad scheme of things, but I must ask: what is the conventional wisdom on Jeremy? I would think he is a misfit for the system, where we would want him to be a 3/4 and D (Bowen-esque), while he has neither range nor elite defensive skills. If he had either he'd have a shot. But I'm assuming he is out of the rotation (barring injuries) and gone after this year?

He had a good run at an NBA career and took home a slam dunk trophy.

Good thing he has his artistic skills to fall back on.

He's a tweener with no 3 point shooting ability - I hope they can make it work for him. It would be a shame to drop Evans while keeping a D-League talent like Clark at the end of the bench.

He has never been a good NBA player and has not improved anything since entering the league. He either needed to learn to shoot and handle the ball, or to defend big guys in the paint. He still does neither. I don't see any dramatic improvement in his years here. I think he is done here after the season. If he even makes the final roster. I would not put it past the Jazz to just cut him and move on.

He is best friends with Hayward, that will keep him at the end of the bench this year....

I think this is the last year of his contract, isn't it? Might as well let him play it out on the bench.

No more playing him in front of Gobert. That was cray.

He is alot better shooter now than when he came into the nba.

He is but he can't shoot 3's or dribble. The bigger problem is he is a defensive liability. He can't guard SF's or PF's well. He is offensive game isn't good enough to overcome his defensive weaknesses. In certain matchups he isn't a defensive problem so you could give him minutes. But Booker and Gobert are better than he is. Kanter should be better.

Yep.
Just pointing out that he has actually improved something

ty Corbin says Evans is one of the oldest players on the team.... He should start

I wouldn't be quite that harsh. I think he HAS improved since he entered the league. He went from being a novelty leaper drafted in the last 2nd round to a rotation player last season, averaging nearly 20 mins/per. He had no shot when he entered the league but had a short mid-range shot last year. Is he a player of the future? No. But most 2nd's don't even make a team. He's been a good addition, given us great attitude and energy off the bench, not to mention his summer work. His problem is that he's a tweener. He just doesn't have the body frame to be a PF and doesn't have the shooting or quickness to defend SF's. He FAR exceeded expectations. IIRC, Jazz scout attended his college game to look at a different player originally.

It's clear his game doesn't fit Snyder's system, where everyone but the 5 needs to be able to shoot 3's. If I'm DL I let Jeremy's agent shop him around the league. If he doesn't find a team wanting to take him on, or a team next season, the Jazz should find him a job within the organization.

I think we should send him to Minnesota for cash/filler that's easily written off. Let the athletic freakshow draw

I still like Jeremy. I want to keep him around.

Crazy how everyone has completely forgotten how well he started shooting the ball last year. How do we know he can't shoot threes. Maybe he could if he was given the opportunity.

I think he can be used as a specialty player. Kinda of a change of pace type of thing. Bring him off the bench for about 15 min per game. He can use his athleticism as an advantage when he is around the rim. Jeremy has sparked the team plenty of times. He always comes in and puts up quick points. He rebounds well. He can block shots. His biggest problem his how skinny he is and how people take advantage of that on the block. Well, be smart and put him in right situations.

He's useful in my opinion. I don't understand why he doesn't get more love around here. It's not like Kanter is playing like any good, but yet he is adored. Kanter may be big, but his defense isn't much better than Jeremy's. Kanter can't dribble or pass either. This isn't meant to knock Kanter, I just think we should be fair when judging the players. Jeremy is at least consistent in what he does. He'll come in every time and give you a quick 10-12 points and spark the bench. Kanter, you don't know what the hell you are ever getting.

At the game on Friday, with the rotation obviously tightening up, I was surprised that Evans wasn't part of it at all. I think he brings a lot of energy and would play well with Exum who can see over the defenders and is strong at the alley-oop pass. Evans with Exum could be a great one-two punch off the bench, bringing energy, length, and some scoring excitement.

Evans has a very limited skill set, largely focused and great leaping. A guy like him has to be able to hit a 3 to be useful in this league and now on this team. If he could really hit the 3 I think we and the coaches would know it by now. He is a fun player to watch, but overall a 12th to 15th kind of guy on the bench.

The thing is though. You are going to have a 12th guy on your bench. It's gonna have to be someone cheap. It might as well be a player like Jeremy who brings a unique skill set and isn't just a redundant player with no hope of playing.

Jeremy is really good at what he does. A smart coach would find a time and place to use it.

Jeremy will come cheap. I say pay him and keep him around.

Jeremy has sparked the team plenty of times.

Agreed.

Count me as wanting him on the team

I'm with Hack on this one. He's different enough and produced enough to give him a chance. And there is not much of a choice given his contract for this year. But for discussion's sake, let's look at Jeremy's position on the team. Jeremy is not getting any preseason play because he is in the same group of players that are under consideration to make the team. Starters + X, Hood, Booker and Gobert are the core group. Then Evans and Novak who are end-of-bench guys who are contracted at the moment. So that is 11. The question is how to finish this year's recipe: a pinch of salt, a pinch of pepper or more oregano or whatever spice to finish things off. Six others are
.
Felix, Jones, Clark are the guards - two larger, defenders, but not oh-fense and one more point guard ish who is more oh-fense. Jones would be a good practices player if he is the tough dude, who defends physically. What is needed after the first 9 players listed? Is Booker and the new Bully Hayward enough "toughness" that you don't need Jones now?
.
Murray, Cooley and Motem are the forwards - one is smaller, scrappier, one is supposedly (I heard it here on Jazzfans, so it must be true...) a 3pt shooting specialist who has done well in the hustle category and just scores + he speaks Australian, which could help the in translating for X. Overall, his skill set is great and could be matured to 'rotation player' someday. Not aware of the others skill sets enough to comment...
.
I'm guessing the first two of that set to make the team is Motum and Clark.

However, it is now matter of that last pinch or two of spice (and it probably personality, work ethic etc.)
