What's new

Jeremy Evans

Why are people saying he's a bad fit for quins system?

Surely a more up tempo is more his style than whatever we were playing before. Maybe he doesn't fit either system, but it must be better than before.

I'm with Hack on this one. He's different enough and produced enough to give him a chance. And there is not much of a choice given his contract for this year. But for discussion's sake, let's look at Jeremy's position on the team. Jeremy is not getting any preseason play because he is in the same group of players that are under consideration to make the team. Starters + X, Hood, Booker and Gobert are the core group. Then Evans and Novak who are end-of-bench guys who are contracted at the moment. So that is 11. The question is how to finish this year's recipe: a pinch of salt, a pinch of pepper or more oregano or whatever spice to finish things off. Six others are
.
Felix, Jones, Clark are the guards - two larger, defenders, but not oh-fense and one more point guard ish who is more oh-fense. Jones would be a good practices player if he is the tough dude, who defends physically. What is needed after the first 9 players listed? Is Booker and the new Bully Hayward enough "toughness" that you don't need Jones now?
.
Murray, Cooley and Motem are the forwards - one is smaller, scrappier, one is supposedly (I heard it here on Jazzfans, so it must be true...) a 3pt shooting specialist who has done well in the hustle category and just scores + he speaks Australian, which could help the in translating for X. Overall, his skill set is great and could be matured to 'rotation player' someday. Not aware of the others skill sets enough to comment...
.
I'm guessing the first two of that set to make the team is Motum and Clark.

However, it is now matter of that last pinch or two of spice (and it probably personality, work ethic etc.)

Evans has had a sprained ankle actually, that is (a reason) why he hasn't been getting minutes lately.

Thanks for that info.
This is the first I have heard of it

I've heard none of the sprained ankle stuff as well. Possible he's got a sprained ankle all of a sudden to stop the rumor mill.

Because Quin's system is defense first. And he can't guard very many NBA players. He also wants players that spread the floor and Jeremy doesn't provide that either.

I like Jeremy but, watching him defend against even the most mediocre PF's in the league, you can see that it just isn't there. And although he has talent, he is lucky to be in an NBA uniform. He really isn't going to contribute enough to our team or any team for that matter to justify signing him. If he had the handling skills that were good enough to play a SG position than he could find work with another team maybe. Let's quit dreaming of what will be and realize what we have. Not much other than a guy that can jump high.

I think you meant SF not SG. Other than that I pretty much agree with the post.

Jeremy has a guaranteed K for this year and all of the guys with guarantees make the team and the guys in camp with make good contracts good luck to you. The Jazz will buy you a John Stockton TShirt and a bus ticket to Boise to earn chump change.

It's a little early in this team's leadership to make these statements. Since Larry died a lot of the old way of doing things have changed. Some for better and some for worse. I would not put it past this new regime of Snyder and Lindsey to release guys who are under contract if a better player comes around. It's not like his guaranteed contract is very big.

I still like him as a 12-14th instant energy sort of guy, but I can see how he doesn't fit the system.

On the other hand, he hustles when he's out there, he seems like a good locker room sort of guy who knows his role, is a former slam dunk champ which has good PR value, and does the extra sorta PR things that a team needs.

So if he gets cut or not signed next season I get it, but if he sticks around on vet minimum sort of contracts, I won't get the outrage that I'm sure some will display.

Karl Malone really like Jeremy Evans. He jump higher than Karl Malone and he dunk with aggression. He has improved his jumper. There was a time at the beginning of last season that Karl Malone saw him hit like 15 in game jumpers in a row. Karl Malone knows that Jeremy Evans needs to improve his long range shooting, but still, Karl Malone likes him.

I won't be outraged. I don't care enough one way or the other. I basically see him as irrelevant to the success or failure of this team.
