I'm driving to Cedar City this weekend and will have access to both The Final Empire and The Game of Thrones audiobooks. Which one should I pick?

Mistborn
Pro: It's lighter, more entertaining reading than ASOIAF.
Pro: It's finished.
Possible Pro: It's basically PG-13. (Also a possible Con.)
Con: After the first book there's a major drop in quality.

ASOIAF:
Pro: It's deeper, richer, infinitely more complex than Mistborn.
Pro: Everyone in America is reading it. You can be a part of this cultural moment.
Possible Con: It's occasionally graphic with the sex and violence. (In case you'll be around other people.)
Con: There are literally hundreds of characters and I suspect they will be hard to keep track of in an audiobook.
Con: It's unfinished.

ASOIAF Con - The plot is sssssssssslllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww and may cast a slumber spell.

I still vote ASOIAF...

JazzGal Why in the hell would you ever come here?

The Final Empire, GOT has a TV show you can watch. Try something different.

Stickler was right about Mistborn. It's a really cool, inventive idea in the fantasy genre but it was pretty underwhelming to me compared to its reputation.

If you want a recommendation on light reading that's also inventive then I'd say the fantasy dystopian trilogy Ann Aguirre's Razorland Trilogy.

Shakespeare Festival - I come down pretty much every year. I'll wave.

I just realized that Game of Thrones is 27 disks at 72 minutes each. Nope, that will take too long. I'll have to read it someday. So Mistborn it is. Thanks for the help!

Right on, enjoy my town.
The trouble with coming there every year is that there is little other than the Festival itself to do as I've been there, done that already. Any new restaurants? I didn't come down last year.

There is a guy that opened two restaurants. 1 Italian (Alfredos, on HWY 56) and 1 Seafood (The Light House about 2100 N Main). They are good considering location. There is also a steakhouse at the corner of 200 N and main called The Depot Grill(never been there). There is a big BBQ place on 200 N and Main that is good as well. Charlie's is the name I think.

You're right on not much else to do.

My vote would be Mistborn. It's one of the best fantasy trilogies I've ever read.

Game of Thrones started great, but then I gave up after about book 3 or book 4 because the sex and violence just got to be too much for me.

Did you read the whole trilogy? Book 1 was great, but pretty standard fantasy fare. Book 2 was cooler, then book 3 is really where my mind was blown.

Enjoy! Remember to not stop after the first book.

Is that Milts place still there up the canyon? I loved that place while I was living in Cedar city

No, and I might not be recalling correctly. I've been meaning to start the entire thing over again. One thing I remember liking about it was the wholesome nature of the writing. I'm trying to read fantasy and not a porn novel. That gets tiring in both books and TV shows.

I've determined Game of Thrones would be too much for me as well (book and TV). So I'll have to continue to live in ignorance of what everyone is talking about. Won't be the first time.
