I just checked out Big Als defensive numbers because I knew that Charlotte has one of the better defenses this year(Steve Clifford right know is a top three defensive coach in the NBA and I'm saying that just after 3 month of action! He is brilliant. If you have one of the better Ds in the NBA with Big Al as your Center and Walker as your PG you have to be really good. He is just amazing. Could praise the guy all day long!). So here are the numbers from Big Al and our two bigs.
Big Al:
Derrick:
Enes:
All of a sudden Big Al is the best defender out of the three guys. Wait...what? Crazy how things are going, isn't it? How can this happen? Well, There are not that many options actually. It could be that Big Al never was a bad defender in the first place and we were stupid to accuse him of being that, the other thing is that Corbin just can't preach defense or he can but he just uses a wrong "defensive system" for the players he has. Make your choice!
I'm shocked because of the post up numbers from the two big fellows! It was clear that Enes had some problems(there should be some improvement down the road just because of the fact that he is getting stronger again) but the numbers from Derrick are a little frightening to be honest with you guys. There have to be some adjustments from the coaching staff. Don't allow that entry pass, be more aggressive on the perimeter and make the opposing guards work for that pass. Let the big men front the post player and make the offense change their game plan or bring a double team every now and than. I'm not a defensive specialist but for god sakes do some. The post up numbers are just horrible!
Look @Big Als PnR number. Oh my goodness! Are you kidding me? Derricks number is not great but it is ok while Enes is just bad. Somebody said it in another thread it didn't look that bad the last year so why are we changing something that indeed worked? Now everybody is saying uhhh Enes is a bad defender he can't do none. He ain't great but he was at least average and there is no reason why he can't be that. And with a better defensive system this could be a good defensive team. The offense is already there just needs a little polishing.
The spot up shooting is also pretty bad and not just the big men Alec/Trey/Gordon are locking bad as well. This is an other major concern. Guys are sleeping on rotations, are a second to slow or rotating to the wrong player. Some times I don't even know if they're watching film.
Last night a good example for a missed rotation. The opposing team is running a PnR, the ball handler is penetrating and of course is beating our perimeter defender. In this case Enes is rotating to help but there is no "helping the helper" and of course his man is getting the ball and scores. All Ty sees is Enes and most of the fans are like "Enes...who else!". And they ran that play quite often and it's not just this game and not just Enes. It is also happening with Derrick and nobody is helping. Our big guys are really reading the plays well in my opinion and there are just two things they can do. Either they stay with their opponent and let the guard score or help and let their man score. Anyway you're the bad guy. The 2nd and 3rd help is not coming if there is a bet anywhere just bet on it.
Last thing about the Bobcats. I said it earlier they have one of the better defenses in the NBA despite Big Al and Walker. Coach Clifford is doing a beautiful job with Charlotte. It may not show this year but they could surprise a lot of people next year. They really just have three scorers(Big Al, Walker and Henderson) so they are losing a lots of games which they should win. They wanna make the POs pretty bad but to not make them could be the best thing for them. They would get their own draft pick if they are in the top10, they will most certainy get the Detroit pick(top 8 protected), they get Portlands pick as well and they have lot's of money because of the expiring contract from Ben Gordon. With that coach, that's a lot to work with.
