What's new

My son is…

So has he picked a sport?

You should get him on something early, and go hard like Brunson’s dad.

I would pick a white man’s sport like soccer.

Picked a sport? Haha no. He plays a ton. Probably too much. But he says he wants to—he likes the social aspect of them a ton I think.

In the fall, he does travel soccer and travel baseball. I think I’m not gonna have my wife sign him up for Sunday night lax and flag football…both are on Sundays plus a flag practice during the week. Idk. Both feel pointless. He also does a wrestling school (run by a runner up national champ ncaa guy) once a week.

In the winter, he does travel soccer, travel baseball, wrestling and rec basketball.

In the spring, it’s both travel sports plus lax.

I’d love for him to play football at some point. But concussions are real, and he’s had two serious ones a couple years ago from indoor soccer, and he’s smarter than he is athletic so at the end of the day, it just doesn’t make sense. All my friends who played collegiately said they’d have him wait til at least 5th or 6th grade…so he’ll just continue playing a **** ton of sports and we’ll see where it goes. He’s having fun and pretty damn good at all these (maybe not basketball his shot is broken haha) so I’m not worried about it.

Concussions are scary.

I totally agree that playing several sports at that age is better than trying to build a prodigy. 10,000/1 people that do that just end up with a resentful kid. If your son finds a serious passion for a sport then support them. Easy math.

How is his schooling going? Health? Is he well adjusted? I know I harp on silly things- it's who I am.

My son?

Yeah, I mean, he’s our 2nd of 3. Our oldest is in 5th grade and has an A+ in four classes, A in three (including sixth grade math—she skipped 5th) and A- in one class for the year…and relative to age and grade, he is much smarter. Was asked to skip 2nd grade as I mentioned earlier…Really has it all going for him. Good looking. Great disposition. Sensitive and thoughtful, perhaps too much so. And God damn he’s fun to watch in sports. Kid plays with a hustle and instincts that are easy to root for.

I'm afraid to know how much all that costs

I am 2 days from my 3rd anniversary of a major concussion. I think i am mostly through it but I keep crossing nouns in a weird way.

Still, that is a lot better than most of the symptoms I have dealt with. Concussions and TBIs are awful. I dont think my journey is over yet.
Thanks for sharing.
Are different concussions different?
Like in MMA dudes get hit in the jaw (the "button") and get knocked out on the regular so I'm assuming those concussions aren't as bad as the football kind that are like skulls getting crushed.

Also, no phone for my 5th grader. The far majority of her friends have them. My wife and I refuse. I told her if she gets all A+’s in 6th grade, then we will get her one.
What about a smart watch?

We had planned on not letting our kids get cell phones until they can buy their own, but they basically have to have one in high school now.

Our compromise is that they get a flip phone after elementary school and get a smart phone in high school.

That sounds busy. Are you ever at home?

Too much. We also do group soccer trainings on the side for all three of them…haha.

Listen, I’d rather this than staring at a tv or iPad all day.

But we’ll see. In two or three years, he’ll probably have to start to choose sports though I will try to avoid that and let him continue playing multiple every season. His coaches love him and because he’s really good in everything they want him on the teams…basketball is the only one where he’s regressed…I think that will change once I put a hoop up.

But in soccer he’s young since it’s by calendar year and he’s a December kid. And yet he’s probably the second best kid on the team and we’re very good. He also played up a year in the winter and was good.

He wrestled what I would call JV last year…meaning he was the 2nd best kid in our town at his weight class…the best kid is in 4th grade and was held back and should’ve been in 5th. He went 11-6. Solid but nothing special…but wrestling, like soccer, is so much technique and skill that takes years to master…so he’ll do a couple camps this summer…start the training at the school as well for 3-4 months leading into the winter season…so I’m curious how he does next year…

In lax, he was asked to play up with a few other kids this season. He did nicely. I think finished with four goals playing against 3rd and 4th graders many of whom were way bigger than him since he’s just 56 pounds. He crushed it when he played for his normal aged team.

In baseball, he’s learning and getting more comfortable. He struggled in his first three travel games going 0-6 with six strikeouts. Near tears. I told him it was good. That everything has come fairly easy to him and the struggle and suffering and working hard are needed steps…reached base his five plate appearance since. But it’s a work in progress. Getting the timing down with faster pitchers. And in the field what to do in certain situations. He’s started to watch it a lot more on tv which will help…but I think in a year or so, he’ll likely be very good.

I might buy a football helmet and pads and have him do some games in them with me this summer…just to get him used to wearing all the gear…a football helmet is noticeably heavier than a lax one imo.

And yeah, he joined our beach clubs swim team this summer lol. All three kids did.

Ainge, is that you?

Joking aside, can't blame anyone who chose to take a break from the jazz this past couple of years. And we are probably gonna tank even harder next year.

It’s more about the brain getting rattled upon impact, then crushed per se, if I’m not mistaken.

My son’s worst one involved him running at top speed. He and another player who was coming from a similar angle, not quite parallel, but close to it both converged on the ball, and upon hitting that player, he got knocked down at full speed, and slammed his head down on the turf…which is fairly thin and concrete underneath. He always gets right back up and didn’t…was seeing things and hearing voices for almost three weeks…did a concussion specialist a couple times who didn’t seem too concerned and said it was par for the course…afterward, I said to him, “Uh, buddy, who doesn’t put their hands down when they head fast to the ground like that?” Scary stuff.

Also, I can’t speak highly enough about his coaches. A lot of former collegiate athletes who just have great dispositions and leadership. Very good men who know what they’re doing and aren’t toxic. That’s a huge part of what makes this so easy.

That's the skull crush variety in my example.
My question is, are the concussions suffered from a punch to the jaw pretty minor and meaningless? Because of those kinda of concussions are similar to the ones in football then how do MMA guys even walk around?
A football player gets a concussion and people talk about how their career could be over if they get a couple more (think tua)
MMA dudes get knocked out over and over and over again and nobody seems concerned.
