Game Thread NBA Draft Lottery - May 12, 2025

Added to Calendar: 05-12-25

I will say that I can absolutely see San Antonio putting together a godfather package to move up 1 spot and nab Cooper Flagg while Dallas gets Harper and a haul to rebuild with. I actually think that’s more likely than them trading for a win now veteran.

Haha Nico isn’t trading Flagg.

This was a brutal result, but the reality of tanking. This was by far and away the most likely outcome for us. I don’t think the mistake was tanking this year, but perhaps the decision to blow everything up in the first place should be reconsidered. What we were left with when we decided to blow it up was these realities.

I don't believe the lottery is rigged and apparently neither does Andy Larsen, however he did post this:

Of the Jazz's 140 lottery combinations, none of them had a 1? And then they don't draw a 1 in 16 draws?

1, they need to broadcast it on national TV for everyone to see.

2, they need to have a third party authority examining all the lottery balls before or after the lottery to make sure they are all the same in terms of weight, size and materials made so they don't have any kind of mechanism in place to rig the result in any way.

Of all the people who witnessed the whole process inside that private room, I don't see anyone making any mentions about examining the lottery balls. Not sure what's so hard for them to do this.

Agreed mostly. The only thing I'd nitpick is that "the decision to blow everything up in the first place should be reconsidered." I don't believe it takes hindsight to realize this now and if we weren't heavily stirred by emotion it was patently visible then.

Sure….What I meant to communicate is that that the decision to tank vs half tank isn’t the one which should be reconsidered. Even with this brutal result, I am 100% sure I’m happier now than if we half and half tank (if you don’t consider the fact that dumb luck would have resulted in us getting a top 2 pick). The real decision was made when we dumped Gobert and Mitchell. Once that decision was made, we now exist in a different world where this 14% chance is the best hope we have and this should have been considered when we dumped Mitchell/Gobert.

What I’m saying is that the only thing to be reconsidered is dumping Mitchell/Gobert. The decision to tank after they had already been traded is a no brainer. But we should not have looked at the tanking route as so roses when we had those two and it did not take hindsight to recognize that. All it took was the acknowledgment of simple probability to know that this was the most likely outcome.

I know I know, I’m probably missing some nuance here and Americans love to make things more dramatic than we need to be because our society is just so ridiculous bored but what would be wrong with doing away with the lottery and just basing the draft on the standings? That way, the worst teams get the help they need and the incentive for a borderline playoff team to tank is taken away? Dallas and SA were already decent teams. Seems like the lottery incentivizes teams like them to tank. It almost makes it so unless you’re a top seeded team, you might consider tanking just to see if you can stock up on top talent.
