Netflix recs?

Ozark is wonderful. If you liked Breaking Bad, and you like forests and lakes, you should like this.

Jason Bateman and Laura Linney are both fantastic.

Yeah, Narcos is excellent. Season 3 was easily as good as the previous two seasons.

Loved Ozark

I just finished season one of Ozark. It stars Jason Bateman as a financial advisor who must go with his family (wife played by Laura Linney) to the Ozarks to launder money and right a situation for the Mexican cartel who was his client.

Very, very good. It gets an 8.9 on imdb. I think that's a tiny bit too high. I'd probably give it an 8.5-8.6. There are some plot details here or there that are questionable and could've been improved upon by the writer(s) but overall, it's really freakin' good and gets better as the season progresses. This may be the exact vehicle Bateman needed to show his chops. He has a few moments in this which are really impressive monologues that are Spacey-esque where you know he's the smartest guy in the room.

I will have to check it out, although the wife has had her fill of "breaking bad"-esque shows. She wants some optimism where it seems the current trend is bleak gritty realism with real pain and suffering (oh yeah, you think breaking bad was real pain and suffering, come watch these guys go through pain and then suffer, oh wait there is another one even more bleak? with witty reparte like "you are goddamned right"? I am IN), or something like that. Might have to watch it alone like I did Fargo and Hannibal.

So is Netflix going to go down? Disney backing out with them, they are supposedly raising prices again. I have a harder and harder time finding family-friendly stuff to watch and most of the original content tries to out TV-MA each other at every turn, although personally I like a lot of it, it isn't really conducive to watching with my 16 year old daughter and sometimes her 14-16 year old friends.

Your 16 year old can't watch TV Mature rated stuff?

Ya ozark is definitely bleak, gritty, and full of pain. Probably even more so than BB.

TV-MA stuff on the pay services is such a mixed bag. One of them portrayed a vampire, um, licking the lady parts of a woman on her period. Yeah it was behind closed doors, but still not really a portrayal I would find acceptable. Another laced it with enough F-words and boobage and full-frontal that it would have had to cut things to get an R I would bet. But another one had like 3 F words and mild portrayal of sex (under the covers panting and stuff). So it is tough to know what that TV-MA really is supposed to convey.

Let em watch it. I still remember watching Risky Business with my parents when they rented it on VHS.

I was about 8 or 9 years old.

Netflix is really mediocre. Pretty poor movie selection overall. God awful programming for the most part. Maybe 1 out of every 6-8 shows is actually watchable.

Ok, you just killed my head of steam. I was going to post that Frontier was pretty good and how it didn't get good critic ratings but pretty good fan ratings and that I can't wait for the next season.

But yeah, the gore, sex, and language has gotten out of hand. Netflix isn't the proprietor in this either. Books are. I get tired of watching a film that comes across more as a porno. I get tired of the stereotypical Irish guy who can't go 3 words without dropping an F bomb. And that's not coming from a prude who doesn't watch porn or who isn't used to a bar scene. If I'm watching a show or reading a book then make it a story.

This. I know I am in an ever-increasing minority who did not raise my kids letting them watch the Saw movies at their 5th birthday and not having all of us sit down to watch the premier of Breaking Bad (or even the walking dead) with my family when my kids were between the ages of 7 and 15 (although my 15 year old got into it later). I guess I am prudish that way but we believe that the world has enough ugliness without doing all we can to bring shock-porn straight into the living room and occasionally we would rather watch something a little lighter and less brooding than Hannibal or Fargo as a family, you know something that doesn't leave you feeling like you need a shower afterward. But lately it seems that is all anyone is producing.

Have you tried the good place which I mentioned earlier? It actually has all of the swear words replaced with words like fork and shirt etc. (in a way that works with the story) Kinda like being on ****ing jazzfanz am I right?

What sort of self respecting 16 year old wants to do anything with their parents other than argue?

Mindhunter.

It's about the beginnings of the behavioral science unit of the FBI and how they became to be. Interviewing "sequence killers," what we now call serial killers. Developing psychological profiles from those interviews. Like that. Really, really good. David Fincher is one of the producers. The lead is based on John Douglas, the FBI's most famous profiler ever. I've read a few of his books including Mindhunter itself. Crazy ****. ****s with your mind. Anyway, the show is excellent. The guy who plays serial killer Ed Kemper crushes his role.

Sounds awesome.
Favoriting it now.
Gotta finish season 2 of Vice Principals first.
