Pretty bold, but why not? Last night, Iggy played all 12 minutes of the 4th quarter when the Warriors put it all together to stop Cleveland. He's so dynamic and does all the little things that don't show up on the boxscore. The biggest part of getting Iggy would be taking him from Golden State. If we did, they can't replace him. David West or any other one or two year vet isn't going to give what Iggy does. They won't have the money to sign anybody who can do what he does. They would be the favorites even without him, but they would lose a massive part of their defensive flexibility and overall depth.
So how do we do it?
We need to move Favors. That is priority #1. Part of our pitch to Iguodala is the ability to start. He's been okay coming off the bench come playoff time, but being a starter on an up and comer like our team might be intriguing. 3 years ago, he was the MVP. This year, he's getting phased out. GS doesn't know his value until they don't have him. He's a luxury we need to take from them.
After we move Favors, #2 is overpaying Iggy. I don't like this as much, but if we are trying to compete against the best, we have to take away one of their assets. Golden State will be comfortable giving him around $10 a year and maybe even try to offer less. I'd be willing to give him a 3 or 4 year deal averaging $15. I know, it's bold. However, Favors is going to require at least that and I feel that Iggy gives us a better chance to win against our likely biggest foe should Hayward return. If we are willing to give similar money to Joe Johnson, why wouldn't we give it to Iguodala?
#3 thing we do is keep Hill. If we are paying Iggy similar money to Favors year 1, we can still re-sign Hill. If we want to win now, we have to keep Hill if his price is anywhere close to affordable.
The end goal is simple:
Curry
Klay
Durant
Green
? at Center
? for their bench. Probably good, old vets like West, Zaza
They don't have anybody even decent signed for next year: https://hoopshype.com/salaries/golden_state_warriors/
versus
Hill, Exum
Hood, Burks
Hayward, Johnson
Iggy, Lyles, Bolomboy
Gobert
And however we plan to use our draft picks and whatever we get for Favors
Our talent level, roster flexibility, and weapons are as strong as I've ever seen in Utah.
Thoughts?
