You do understand that BigB was joking, right?
Not sure if you're familiar with the history, but there were a couple guys who came to a poker game who were open carrying. I actually didn't notice until more than half-way through. I didn't confront them about it when I did notice and nothing bad happened. They were nice enough guys, had good manners, were mostly low key. Not sure if it was some sort of political statement, if they always open carry everywhere, if they thought they needed protection in case someone tried to hold-up the poker game or what.
I think it was wrong of them not to inform me and ask for my permission. Going forward the rule is "No weapons at the table." That's the rule.
I don't expect you to really know this about Utah, but there is a lot of concealed carry here. A lot. Like a lot a lot. It's legal. There are relatively few issues that result from it. We don't have old west style shoot outs in the streets on a daily basis or people settling traffic disputes with gun fire. Despite what the anti-gun crowd thinks, the overwhelming majority of concealed carry folks are responsible and have their concealed firearm as a last resort to prevent a threat to their life.
The rule is "No weapons at the table" so I'd ask my guests to respect that rule. If you do have a concealed carry firearm I'd ask you to keep it locked in your vehicle. (Most concealed carry permit holders have a way to do this safely since many employers don't allow concealed carry while at work). But like I said, concealed is concealed. If someone did have a firearm that was properly concealed then none of us would be any the wiser.
But there are a few reason why I think a poker game is a bad place to carry a weapon, concealed or not. First and foremost, when the table is full everyone is sitting pretty close together. It could be difficult to properly secure your firearm and equally difficult to access it while at the table. At the same time it would be relatively easy for someone to take it before you could react and it might be easier for people to notice that you are carrying, thus making the weapon NOT concealed.
Anyway, we're all gonna be alright. I don't anticipate a shoot out.
