I figured this would be a good place to discuss the race for the 8 spots in the West throughout the season, with updates as it pertains to the Jazz.

Right now GS, San Antonio, OKC, Houston, Memphis, LA Clippers seem to be mortal locks to make the playoffs barring major injury.

The Jazz, New Orleans, Dallas and Phoenix are the next four most logical to fight for the last two spots. I'm not buying Sacramento as a playoff contender...yet....

Where does everyone see the Jazz in that picture? It should be fun to see how we all vary our visions as the season goes on.

How refreshing to finally have a race to the top discussion rather than a race to the bottom.

Sounds about right to me. I've said that making the playoffs is not make or break, especially with Exum out. But they need to be in the race at the very least. Every game up till the last week or so should be a meaningful game. If they miss the playoffs by a game or 2 I'll still consider this season a success.

Great thread idea. Will be fun to watch Dallas, New Orleans, Phoenix, etc

Given NOLA's current injury problems, I would think they're far from a lock making the POs. Only OKC's injuries opened the door for them last year. If they get behind early, the Jazz could take the 7th seed pretty handily.

I don't think you can ever count New Orleans out unless AD goes out.

There are two mini races in the west. I agree.

Clips, Rockets, Grizz, Spurs, Warriors and Thunder for 1-6.

Kings, Jazz, Suns, Mavs and Pelicans for 7-8.

Jazz will win their race and land 7th and Pelicans take 8th.

Agree with this post except for the "Kings" part. I think they'll be out of the playoff picture by the All-Star break.

But I consider them a dark horse as of now. If by some miracle they get their emotions incheck they could be pretty good. SO to start the seasosn I will list them. They are more than likely the first loser.

I still have a soft spot in my heart for D-Will, so if he has a resurgence this year then Dallas should be real tough assuming Parsons, Matthews (wasn't a Jazz man long enough to earn my loyalty) and Dirk are healthy. It is actually pretty crazy how fast injuries derailed D-Will's career and how quick his star fizzled out. He was arguably the best point guard in the league and now is on the brink of being pedestrian/serviceable/washed-up.

I like the positivity of this thread and look forward to it's updates...even though we probably won't make the playoffs.

My bold prediction for this season is that the Heat finish 6th or worse in the East.

As for Dallas, nope don't think they will make the playoffs. Too many injuries + players well past their prime.
