I get the hesitation if you want to factor in the uncertainty on Rudy, but it is hard for me to understand how we can regard this is a poor/meh offseason when we
  • Switched Bradley out for Favors
  • Switched Mudiay out for Harrison
  • Switched Davis out for Azubuike
  • Switched Tucker out for Hughes
  • Switched JWF out for Forrest
  • (last 3 are unclear contributors, but can't be a downgrade, at least)
  • Retained everything good we had (again pending Rudy), with some legitimate hopes for improvement from esp. 2nd-year players
  • Clearly upgraded defense personnel with (likely) little negative impact on offense
  • Gave Quin a fuller toolbox
We'll see how things go, of course, but from my view, it looks at least like a good (to possibly very good) offseason.

Every person they added is better than who they replaced.

Favors is a huge upgrade over Bradley
Shaq is an upgrade over Mudiay
Dok is probably going to contribute more than Davis
Hughes has way more potential than NWG or JWF

Maybe Oni can take more minutes and Niang less, but I think the lineup is far better than last year, and I thought last year was pretty successful

Shaq might just be replacing NWG.

Will be surprised if Oni isnt clearly ahead of Shaq on the depth chart all season.
Could be right, though it may be Shaq's injury and the fact that Oni knows the system better that contributes more than their quality as basketball players in a vacuum.

But I do expect that Shaq could get some run at PG at times (Donovan or Conley out for a game, for example) where I don't see that from Oni.

Oni is a far better passer and decision maker than Shaq. Shaq can penetrate better, but that's it.

If Shaq replaces Niang and Niang never sees the floor. I'd give it an A- until we know about Gobert

It's a C if Niang gets 16 or more minutes a game

I mean I think you are assuming that Oni is going to be a great defender which Shaq already is. Oni could be solid or good and still be worse on that end... and that end of the floor is where Shaq shines.

This thread makes me excited for the season. Last year we were all over valuing the off-season and frankly we underperformed.. This year most people are down playing the off-season and so I won't be as bothered if we underperform.

Expectations make and break the experience. HH for example will likely be disappointed with Shaq where most may be pleased.

Jazz front office had a plan, and they've executed it so far. You can question their priorities, but you can't fault them for executing their plan.

I think the Jazz want to re-sign Gobert and be able to trade him if he starts pouting again. Acquiring Favors and Udoka gives them the ability to handle that contingency.

I don't see an obvious move for them that they could have made off the cuff. They're in a position to trade Conley, Royce, Favors or Rudy if the right deal comes up. Maybe they consider trading Mike for Otto Porter or Kevin Love at mid-season. Not sure.

If they really thought Udoka was their guy in the draft, then that explains their whole draft strategy.

I bumped them up to an A-.

The Favs signing was an appropriate dollar amount for the quality of the player but an overpay for his role. They made up for the improper allocation by getting Shaq on the cheap.

I didn't love the Udoka pick but at least I can kinda see what they were thinking in a vacuum. He's a much better prospect than TB... but as far as the asset goes his value likely drops until he can get on the court and that will be an uphill battle.

All the seconds to dump salary was necessary to get below the apron but the cost was a smidge higher than it needed to be.

Overall it is probably more of a B+ but gave the A- for plugging the holes we needed to.

I agree with you for the most part. I just think this timeframe is odd though. The Udoka pick followed by the Favors re-signing would have made perfect sense followed by a Rudy trade. Having all 3 is just weird in my opinion. It's so unlike any other team in the league to have 3 such bigs. And if trading Rudy was in the cards, we waited too long to strike while the offerings were at their greatest. People were throwing around assets like hotcakes to start free agency (us included).

The Rudy contract situation really impacts this offseason for me. I think it's ridiculous that it hasn't been resolved yet. Don and Rudy were the most important issues of the offseason. One of the two is still unsettled.

I like our additions, but I'm not sure if any of them are on the court in very important situations. Maybe Favors, but that probably comes at the cost of Rudy. Not really sure how much we trust Oni and Shaq against a team like Denver, or the LAs.

Even if the Jazz want to trade Rudy, re-signing him will increase his trade value. So they want to re-sign Rudy either way. Also, they need to give Udoka some runway to see if he's going to be the real deal. They've obviously seen some potential, but he needs to show he can defend at an NBA level.

Oni and Hughes are likely going to challenge Royce and Joe for minutes. The Jazz were relying on Ingles too much last season. He needs his minutes to be more controlled. Morgan may also challenge for some of Niang's minutes at the 4, which would give us more defense and rebounding. Harrison gives us more consistent defense at the backup PG spot than Mudiay gave us, and he gives us a defensive specialist, like a Pat Beverly, we can put on guards who are lighting us up. So the Jazz are getting younger and a bit more athletic deeper in their rotation.

If he's signed, that means both sides came to an agreement. To trade him, it means something is wrong (on or off the court) not too long after we came to said agreement. I'm not sure he retains great trade value on a really big, long deal if things so south from a lockerroom perspective.

We have seen great players on their last year of their deal get trade value back in the past. I think it is very risky to expect any kind of Rudy trade AFTER he signs a deal.
