Choose a PG

After seeing the Jazz get torched almost every game this month by other PG's, it is harder for me to choose Marshall.

Has anyone seen a game where it was Marshall versus a very athletic PG? How'd he do?

Against ranked opponents, Marshall has never hit a double digit assist night (though he's almost averaging 10apg on the year).

Against MSU - 5asts, 5To's
Wisc - 7ats, 4to's
UK - 8asts, 3to's
Duke - 8asts, 3to's

Those numbers are not bad, at all. They're just not impressive enough to take a slow, non-shooting PG, in the lottery, in this draft.

Thanks..but I meant how he fared against them defensively.
His assists just depend on how well his teammates are doing in that game.

He hardly ever fares well defensively. He's slow, but he's also has John Henson and Tyler Zeller backing him up, which is very helpful. Most college points don't have much of a mid range game so it's either blow by him and get their blocked at the rim or blow by him and dish it off.

Oh yeah .. he gets burned. Jordan Taylor, Marquis Teague, Rivers/Curry all got past him with relative ease. Luckily for Marshall, he has Zeller and Henson to hide the defensive ineptitude.

Once again, I'm not down on Marshall .. I just urge everyone to know what he's not, as well as what he is ..

Fill in the blanks;

Marshall is going to _______________ as an NBA PG.

Rivers is going to ________________ as an NBA player.

The more that I watch Rivers the more that I am convinced that he can be a strong starter if not a "next to elite" player in the league. Maybe I am projecting too much but I feel so much safer with Rivers than I do Marshall going forward. Marshal has two big positives and they are passing and court vision. He is better than anyone else in college ball right now. After those two things there is a steep drop off in elite level production. Rivers has positives in athleticism, scoring, shooting, rebounding (for his position) and "IT". There there is a drop off after that but it is not much.

Yes, I am biased. I want the Jazz to win and blow people out of the water. I just don't know that Marshall can take the Jazz to that level.

Well if Marshall can't defend elite PG athleticism, then I might give up on him.
It's too bad. There really are not a whole lot of true floor generals out there in the NBA. In fact, only D Will, Nash, and CP3 come to mind.

But I digress, if he can't handle the elite athleticism of the latest NBA PGs (Rose, Lowry, Westbrook, etc.) then he won't do very well in the modern NBA.
Which is a shame....I miss having a true floor general PG on the floor. It's just not Utah without one. And the NBA is crappier without them.

Honestly, is there a starting PG that can handle the athleticism of Rose and Westbrook? I would say no.

The only hope that you have is getting those players to work hard on both sides of the ball. If those guys can just sag off Marshall all game because he is not quick enough to blow by them and his shot is not a threat then they can basically rest up on the defensive end.

The Jazz need a PG that is a threat and that can at least slow those guys down. That PG does not need to be a pure PG.

That is hard for me to say because I have been a hard core Jazz fan my whole life. I have made fun of the "elite" PGs that could barely average 7 assists per game. I would love to have a Stockton back this team but it is not realistic. Stockton is a special player and the game might never see anyone like him again. The game has changed and we as a fan base need to recognize that and stop wishing for the past.

Rose can stop Westbrook.
Westbrook can stop Lowry
Lowry can stop Rose

Rock Paper, $*&*&in Scissors

On a more serious note, we're just both on different ends of the same coin.
You see a PG that is a threat being the solution.
I see a passing PG (Marshall) being the solution.

I will give that to you. I guess we should wait until the tournament. From everything that I heard that is when DWill set himself apart (I was on my mission at that point, in Chicago no less), and I believe that Rivers will do the same. Maybe Marshall will do the same, we will just have to wait and see.

Also, my definition of stop and your definition of stop I think are different. When I say stop I mean shut down. Westbrook cannot shut Rose down and Rose cannot shut Westbrook down. Lowry does not have the athleticism to compete with either IMO.
