Maybe it was. But DL was man enough to admit (by his actions) that he blew some picks and that the training staff can't squeeze diamonds out of cubic zirconia. He's FINALLY jettisoned players like Burke, Elijah, etc. and brought in talented vets. Still maintain he could have/should have done this 2 years ago. It wouldn't have stunted the growth of the youngsters. On the contrary, we've heard nothing but how much Hill, JJ and Boris are teaching their young Jedi.
But Millers must have needed some extra spending cash, so DL skimped for a couple of years. Now (and maybe because of Hayward's opt out), DL has gone out and spent $ to put a winning team on the floor.
A few thoughts here: First, go back to the season after Kanter was traded. The team was turning a corner and our FO was being praised league wide for the team they were putting together. At that point, most of the naysayers around here kind of just disappeared and kept a low profile, as the future of the team was looking as bright as any up and coming team in the league.
Next, Exum goes down and then Utah has to deal with both Rudy and Favors missing significant time, not to mention AB again. At that point, anyone blaming the FO for our problems just had a completely unrealistic idea of how things work. Now, there's no doubt that some things could have been done differently. I, for one, have been very frustrated at how long it took to move Treyd Burke. However, I also understand the concern of dumping him and then having him breakout. His trade value was never really high enough to justify moving him instead of giving him every opportunity to develop.
As for the comments about the millers, they lose money by not making the playoffs. I'm sure they would have been tickled to have had the chance to go all in a year or two ago, had the right opportunity presented itself. Rebuilds take time and impatience is a great way to build a team that never gets past the 1st round. Sometimes it seems like fans look at rebuilding as if GMs can just pick players like ordering off a menu in a restaurant. If only it were that simple.
Having said that, the whole cake baking thing was always a half truth. No doubt in my mind, had the right opportunity come along a year or 2 ago, DL would have gone for it and hoped for the best.
Either way, we now have players like Lyles and Hill that probably wouldn't be here if things hadn't happened the way they did. So the result of taking an extra year or two is that now we have a couple extra rounds in the chamber we wouldn't have otherwise.
This team has a great chance of going deep in the playoffs over the next few years. If/when that happens, fans might just be glad it took an extra year or two to build the team even stronger.
