Quin Snyder is the new coach

The Quin hire would have never happened under KOC. I thought Quin won the presser and the Locke interview showed his intensity. I think that part of the battle for an NBA coach is to deal with the media. I think at least he will be interesting to hear.

Hard to argue with what he's saying. I know I'd feel better with an assistant coach that specializes running the defense.

This is supposed to be Alex Jensen's specialty. His NBDL teams were very good defensively.

Thought I read somewhere that Jensen is moving up to the bench and would have a more involved role. DL really believes strongly that being a D-League head coach helps prepare you for success. He now has three guys who put time in there - Snyder, Jones and Jensen.

I still think that they need to hire Messina. That's the big addition that they need for this staff. Other than that, I agree that I hope they spend the time and money to build the best staff possible. Specialization is not a bad thing. Get a coach for the bigs. Get a shooting coach. Hire a defensive assistant. Move them around and have them focus on getting the most out of each and every player on the roster.

Greg said that Quin was the guy as soon as Quin said he would personally be taking over the defense.

That's the reason for discussion.

yeah, pop looks like a real head coach, while snider looks like an assistant coach
 
I would be incredibly satisfied with a Snyder, Messina, Jones, and Jensen coaching staff.
 
Just finished listening to the press confrence and Locke interview...

The dude knows nobody on our team.....

Was kinda disappointed then realized this is really good for our young guys!

They will not be judged on previous roles they have played or minutes the have received!

Must say I'm really excited about this hire!!!

That's a good start. Have Malone keep working with the big guys and hire a shooting coach to help iron out mechanics, and I'd be very happy with that setup.

I'd have rather just had Messina, but the decision has been made. I'd rather hire Messina as an assistant and see where we're at three years from now, than to not have him at all.

Yup, that's how I feel. I too would have preferred Messina-- but Messina as an assistant >> no Messina at all. Also, I like Quin.
 
Would Messina want to be an assistant in NBA?
He's 54 years old.
Time is running out for him.
Three years or more as an assistant is a long time for him.

He probably wouldn't stay here those 3 years. He'd come, help out, and move on to a better team and win a championship.
 
As long as Quinn can keep his detail obsessions under control, I think we will see a much more disciplined team. He is kinda of reminding me of Thibiodeaux.

KOC never went with a full rebuild and the successor to Sloan was already chosen. I give KOC a lot of kudos for the job he did; he made the team competitive again in short order after losing two HOF'ers. Many teams go into long losing periods (Boston, Chicago, even LA). It will be interesting to see what happens to SA once Duncan, Parker and Manu hang 'em up.
 
Speaking of D-League teams, because we are taking over the Idaho Stampede's basketball operations, who do you guys think that we will name as their head coach? Now that Snyder is in command, do you think that he will choose somebody that he knows, or, will he assign somebody already associated with the Jazz? They obviously will be running our offense and or sets, so, who is it going to be? Maybe Alex Jensen? Brad Jones was briefly the head coach of the failed Utah Flash. I think that the D-League is a highly untapped place that the Jazz can develop players, especially if we control said team's offensive sets and the amount of minutes players are going to get. With as many young players as we potentially will have next year, I think that it would be wise for us to use this resource.

Both Brad and Alex have already "been there, done that." After the Flash, Jones coached SA's team (succeeding Snyder) and won a D-League championship, IINM.

It's interesting how fate/luck/kismet...whatever you want to call it, sometimes sets a person on a incredible journey. Had it not been for Sloan changing his mind about coaching the Evansville team, he would have perished in that horrible plane crash in 1977. As for Snyder, he tucked his tail between his legs and moved to Austin after his downfall at Missouri. It was a move completely independent of basketball; he liked the city and wanted to get away. But fate intervened. The Toros had just been sold by David Kahn, a good friend of Snyder to the SA Spurs. And the Toros coach, Dennis Johnson, had passed away a few months previously during a workout. Kahn got in touch with Quin and then recommended him to the SA management group (RC Buford and Dell Demps). I believe Dennis Lindsey was hired as SA's assistant GM just a few months later.
