Rockies trade Ubaldo Jimenez for prospects

The Rockies have agreed to trade ace pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, who has thrown the only no-hitter in club history and was the first Colorado pitcher to start an All-Star Game, to the Cleveland Indians for four prospects, although the deal for one -- pitching prospect Drew Pomeranz -- cannot become official until next month.

The Rockies will immediately receive pitchers Alex White and Joe Gardner, and first baseman-outfielder Matt McBride. Pomeranz cannot be traded until next month because he was signed last August, and Major League Baseball rules say a player cannot be traded until one year into his professional career.

I just don't get this deal, Ubaldo is the best pitcher Colorado has ever had and they trade him away for unproven prospects. He's also got a bargain of a contract so that wasn't an issue and from what I hear is a good person off the field. Any rockies fans thoughts on the deal?

Interesting move to say the least.

I saw him pitch against the Bees several years ago right before he broke into the bigs... throwin 100mph much of the game was pretty sick to watch.

From what I hear the Rockies' thinking is that they are top flight prospects so if both of them pan out the Rockies will have much better pitching than just having Ubaldo. The other thought is that Ubaldo will never go back into ace form and will be another Dontrelle Willis who had one great season and then plummeted back to earth.

Of course that's the best case scenario and that's a lot of hoping. As a Rockies fan I'm really undecided about this trade. I do wonder if Ubaldo has the mental toughness to be a truly great pitcher. I will say having him pitch that inning was pretty bush league on Saturday. I love what I've heard about the left handed prospect (who's name I'm blanking out on), so I'll reserve judgement until I see him pitch.

This how Baseball works. The Astros just traded their only two good players for prospects. The crappy teams sell house to the teams with playoff hopes.
