Rudy's offense

He definitely needs to increase his touch around the rim. I doubt post moves is the answer to his offensive struggle as he is easily moved around in the post and I doubt he will ever be a good post scorer. Rather he should try to add one-dribble moves to get to the rim to at least draw up a foul and may be a little floater in the future as a counter move. I also doubt he can have a healthy mid range game where he can get into a shooting form quickly before anyone can poke it out of his hands but it would be awesome if he did and it would complement his dribble game very well.

Utah has proven they can win with Rudy exactly as he is, even with tons of room to improve our offense elsewhere. Even if Rudy doesn't improve offensively at all, if Utah can increase production from the SG/PG and bench, we are going to win a lot of games. I just don't see Rudy's offense as a big concern. Much more worried about the offense coming from the PG spot. It would be nice if Rudy could average 20 points a game, but even if he's around 10-12 PPG, I think Utah will be a force with increased productivity elsewhere.

This would be a weird example, because the player I will talk about plays a different position, but, oh well... You know how Jimmy Butler was consider defensive specialist with limited offensive game for years? His pts/36(10.9, 11.9, 12.2) were very similar to Rudy's(11.3 this season) in his first 3 seasons. If Rudy can make a similar jump in his offensive game, it would be awesome. Yes, we can probably win even without him putting 18 ppg, but imagine the possibilities if he can actually get to 16-18ppg at 63% TS%... he is extremely long and with development of some offensive moves, he'd have purely physical advantage over the majority of the centers in the league. I don't see a problem in trying to exploit that advantage on both ends of the floor. To me this is not a question of concern and worry... it's more a question of possibilities and opportunity to be even more special. If you don't like the Butler example, look at Favors - he was thought to be very limited offensively player, and is now scoring 19pts/36. I just feel like there is room to grow and it would be a shame not to explore those opportunities.

Rudy improving offensively is one of the things I am least concerned about when it comes to this team. His ppg per 36 has improved from 8.6 to 11.3, while playing nearly 5x the minutes he played last year. He seems to be naturally driven to improve, & I fully expect him to eventually get that # closer to 14-15 ppg, which would make him a 14-15/14/3+ C (per 36), with elite rim protection, which is more than anyone could reasonably ask for out of their starting 5. Anything more is just icing on the cake. Even if he were to stay exactly where he currently is offensively (11-12 ppg per 36), he would still be a top 10 C in the league.

In other words, Rudy is a badass as he is and we don't need improvement to love the guy long time. I get that, it's a given. My question is regarding how he can develop into something more. I have no clue about bball mechanics, footwork, shooting form, etc. but something about him seems off and EASILY fixed (with a lot of repetition from a damn near world class athlete).

Yeah, I just called Rudy a damn near world class athlete. Not world class as in D-Will I'm world class athlete I aint' losing no damn dodge ball tournament but the dude has all the tools there to be in the discussion. I think he can develop his screen and dive game into something special but it's going to take something I cannot pinpoint. Maybe Goose can chime in.

But teh offense is the most important thing. But spacing and stuff..

Isn't Okur an ambassador for us? Just have him work with Memo and one of the developmental coaches. If he can become a pick and pop 3 point specialist he will be a deadly weapon. Channing Frye couldn't shoot threes up until a few years in the pros.

Get that pansy ***, goggle wearing long socks and short shorts stuff out of here. Sky hook. . . His go-to move needs to be jamming it down with brutality ripping the damn rim off of the backboard and handing it to the ref while the security dude signals for someone to sweep up the glass and put in a new backboard. Well, that and an offset free throw line jumper. . .
All he needs is a FT line jumper. We've already seen he can get to the hoop with one dribble. But he needs to make defenders pay if they play off him. That's what makes Boogie so tough to defend.

And no to the 3. One of Rudy's greatest strengths is offensive rebounding. I want to see him around the hoop all the time.

Yup. If you told me he's gonna develop a 20 footer, I probably wouldn't be floored. Sky is the limit for Rudy

I'd be floored. He struggles with his mechanics (from a consistency standpoint) on FT's.

Gobert is a righty that prefers to finish close to the rim with his left. Clearly there is untapped offensive potential there. I have no doubt he'll be at least be serviceable.

If he could develop nothing more than a baby hook turning left or right say out to 10-12 feet, and that is really not a tough shot to master especially considering he has already shown ability with his off hand, he would be formidable. There is no one in the league currently who could realistically even bother a shot like that from Rudy. No need for anything fancy. Get stronger in the upper body, add a little hook shot, and boom 15 ppg is well within reach. 15 ppg, 14 rbg, 4 bpg, 3 apg = MVP candidate.

Coaches already have begun to go small as an answer to Gobert-Favors because Gobert can't really impose his will offensively against players that simply have no business guarding him from a physical standpoint. I am not a huge fan of playing in the post as a primary way to generate points, but I am very big on fundamentals and keeping the defense honest. Where having a jumper is usually the most important and effective way of making the defense play you, in Rudy's case, I want him to be able to reliably score over players that don't have the size to be guarding him. Right now, he doesn't really make teams pay for going small, so all I'm asking is when Harrison Barnes is trying to guard him, be able to get a hook off right over him, not Anthony Davis.

But like others have said, I'll gladly accept what he's been even without improvement. But with a catch-and-shoot jumper at the top of the key, a simple hook shot, and continued development as a threat as the roll man, holy ****.

Two thoughts:

1- this is why I keep saying Favors will be an All Star next year, not Gobert. Gobert won't score enough.

2- As Exum improves, Gobert and Favors' offensive numbers will sky rocket. As Exum becomes more willing to shoot, the pick and roll drop off will become easier. If Exum could finish at the rim, could imagine Exum and Favors running the P&R, with Hayward and Hood waiting for an open three? Or Exum and Favors running the P&R, nothing there, kicking out to Hood/Hayward who then immediately run the P&R with Gobert? Man, the potential is there.

I was originally all for going after and Carroll or Snell or Matthews or Middleton, but with Hood's play, I dunno anymore. It might be fun to see what Exum and Hood look like in summer league before adding too much to them team.

I think Burks might be the odd man out and I really like him.
I agree with this. I've been a critic of Burks but I think Hood has already shown more on both ends than I've ever seen from Burks. Either way I think Rodney and Burks will both get a lot of minutes next year. One of them will just have to do it from the bench.
