Somebody explain Derrick Williams love to a Jazz Fan

If Williams falls to the Jazz, the Jazz have to take him. I'd also be interested in taking a defensive three, Singleton, at 12. That leaves:

Harris/FA PG/FA PG
Hayward/Miles/Bell
Williams/Singleton
Millsap/Favors/Evans
Jefferson/Okur

Hopefully Bell will be in a suit.

If we did that we would looking to make a trade. We need some more guards.

I think it should be noted how much Williams has improved his game. Not just in college, but since high school. He was the sixth man on his high school team as a sophomore, wasn't really on the radar as Division 1 prospect as a senior (he was ranked 72nd overall prospect, 25th positional prospect as a PF on ESPN Recruiting), and now he is a potential number 1 overall pick. If he can continue improving at this pace, he will be scary good. I don't see any reason to think he won't continue improving either.

Jeez, I wish everyone would stop including Miles in their rotation predictions. He sucks. Please don't bring that hack back.

Hayward, Bell, CJ? They're good for 48 minutes combined, no?

I posted this yesterday in the draft thread (assuming the Jazz pick re-sign AK, pick up CJ's option, grab DWill2 and Reggie Jackson):

C: Big Al (32), Favors (16)
PF: Favors (12), Millsap (18), DWill (18)
SF: Millsap (12), AK (28), DWill (8)
SG: Hayward (28), CJ (20)
PG: Harris (30), Reggie Jackson (18)

It would be incredible if the Jazz could pick up Williams with the #3 (or move up to the #2).

I say "expensive" but what I mean is they're really rare and hard to come by. So I don't like to spend them on PGs since you can find guys like Rondo at 21.

Use those rare picks on rare commodities. PGs aren't rare, and to win you don't need an elite one anyway.

This is my opinion. You disagree. We're still friends.

Rondo got picked by a good team and was a fit. I believe 100% if he was picked by almost any other team he would be a bench player. He got picked by the right team and landed in the right situation. That is what happens with most late round picks. Almost all the top PG's are lottery picks. Dwill,CP3, Jason Kidd, Derrick Rose, Westrbook, Mike Conley, Billups, etc.

There are guys like Parker and Rondo who got picked by great teams at later stages of the draft and where great fits.

Ok well, I'm just not that impressed with Knight. I'd sooner take a chance on finding a Rondo or Parker later on than grab Knight at 3. If we're talking Irving that's a different conversation.

If you're worried about Marvin Williams - remember Marvin never produced in college the way Derrick Williams has.

Marvin was the 4th or 5th option on his college team.

Derrick Williams produced as a first option while dealing with double-teams.

Being an UCLA Alum, I've watched a great deal of PAC-10 basketball over the years, and Derrick Williams is going to be very good.

The Danny Granger comparison is somewhat accurate in such a way that they are both very hard worker and show 'heart' for the game. Granger single handedly carried that New Mexico team to Sweet 16 (i think) while DWill 2.0 took Arizona to Elite 8. However, Granger's game relies a lot on coming off screens as opposed to creating offense for himself (which is why he's a good 2nd option, not first).

The Paul Pierce comparison is legit. They both aren't volume 3 point shooters (not in the beginning of Paul Pierce's career), but they shoot a very good percentage. He is not extremely athletic but has good lateral quickness and just has a feel for the game. DWill 2.0 is very crafty and he can pretty much get to the hoop any time he wants. And here's something that translates into the NBA - he gets to the foul line the way Pierce does, meaning even when he is having an off night (which he pretty much never did in college), he can still find a way to score - and you need that in your go-to scorer.

In the beginning of this past season, when he was barely a lottery pick on most mocks, John Hollinger wrote an article on how ridiculous DWill 2.0's PER is from his freshman campaign, and how difficult it is going to maintain that. Well guess what, he did, and improved on his outside shooting - his previous worst attribute. He is also a clutch player who made many many MANY big plays down the stretch in every game... not just in the NCAA tourney.

People are concerned about him being a tweener, but I'm not. There is a reason why despite being a 'tweener', he is still a possible #1 pick. Someone mentioned earlier that he hasn't seen anyone who improved that much over his two years in college, and I agree wholeheartedly. I'd compare his development to Russell Westbrook (from my alma mater UCLA), they were both 3 star recruits out of high school, and improved so much in first two years to the extent that they kind of "have" to go in draft a year early. And people were also concerned about Russell Westbrook being a tweener, and look - he is now one of the brightest young star in the NBA, and I fully expect DWill to be the same.
