Keep in mind that I am in no way comparing the history of these words/terms beucase lets be honest there is no comparison. Having said that here we go...

Is political hate more intense and divisive right now, in this moment in time, than any other hate or "ism" (sexism, racism, religious bigotry...) in America? Is political hate merely being given different names? Such as racism or communism?

Thoughts?

I'm not sure I follow, but the hate led by the media right now at very least is on par with the Communism/Nazi hate.

I wasn't around back then but I think things were a bit more divisive during the Civil War.

I am talking about is hate based on political affiliation more intense and wide spread right now than racism, religios bigotry or sexism is right now in America?

Not since I heard my grandfather talk about the "damn *******" (n-word) have I heard as much vitriol spewed at a particular group as to hear how some of us talk about democrats or republicans. I friend of 20 years or so, but who I don't see very often, and have always respected, shocked me when he talked about the republicans like they were scum and deserved to literally be wiped off the face of the planet. He used many expletives and when I jokingly said, "let's send them all to an island and nuke it" he said "you're not ****ing far off, kill all the ****ing ********, and their families" and the scary thing was he wasn't joking. I don't know about all of political history, but I can tell you that in the 30 or so years I have been paying attention to politics we are right now about as divided as I have ever seen it.

This is why I never talk about politics with my friends - ever. I've had friends for 10-15 years and I can say I have no idea what their political affiliation is. It's just not worth it.

If I'm talking politics with you, rest assured I don't give a **** about you.

I hear a lot more intense hate for Republicans than I hear for Democrats. The Republicans seem to direct their political hate not directly at Democrats but at what they perceive to be be evils in our society (degradation of Christian values, illegal immigration and the non-American immigrant communities, welfare state, etc.) but in that they seem fairly often to have a more something needs to be done but the damn Democrats are benefiting from it so they won't do it attitude. It's really from the hard core liberals that I hear the most shocking sentiment. They view the intentions of the Republicans as evil and the Republicans as hateful puppet masters with their hordes of mindless hate and fear fueled followers. Now, don't get me wrong, Conservatives have no lack of hatred for Reid and Pelosi, along with their disgust with Obama, but I hear much more shocking general hatred coming from liberals in regard to conservatives. Like everything would be flowers and sunshine if we could only get rid of "those types".

I recently started visiting the Tribune comment section and holy ****. I dare you to express a moderate position there. Be prepared to get mass shouted down and have every aspect of your being ridiculed. The "intellectuals" there know your type and they aren't going to stand for it for a goddamn second.

So basically what I am seeing is yes. This new hate is more intense than others right now. Isn't it amazing how blind we can be to our own history? When has hate ever improved us as a country or a species?

Glad to know it is not just me that sees it.

Ok.... let's talk politics. What are your political views? Spill your guts.

It's a joke Candrew... don't actually tell me, and I actually agree with the sentiment. It can be a rough topic amongst friends.

It can be a rough topic amoung friends. I don't shy away from it though. If I have a friend that will no longer speak to me over something as silly as a different political views on a subject than I don't need them as a friend.

There are people that can take serious conversations and have different views and still be friends, there are others that seek only those with the same views. I have no point to saying this.

Freaking liberal... get out of my house.

Understood.

I feel like there's a wider gap than there has been for a long, long time. I also feel like there's so much polarity if anyone steps an inch closer to the middle they're a terrorist/commie/socialist/satanist/racist/biggot/womens rights activist/tree hugger/drug dealer.

More than every before? well the civil war happened.. but I thought that was mainly one big issue. Now a days it seems like everything.

Good question. Don't have an immediate answer off the top of my head. Not sure if political hate is worse now than during the Clinton era. The Wall Street Journal really disliked Bill and Hilary.

This is a bit of an exaggeration. Political hate more intense and widespread than racial or gender hate? When was the last time someone was killed for being a democrat?

It's a question asking if you think that's the case. How is that an exaggeration?

This idea about that capacity to just not give a damn is in the modern world an essential ingredient of good mental health. The same capacity is actually essential to any good relations with humans. It is the mainspring of human liberty, and without it you can never develop the capacity to think independently or act in your own best interest. Rhett Butler literally emancipated males captivated by Southern Culture when he said, to Scarlett O'Hara--- a classic figure of female dysfunctional relations--- "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

I think this capacity to place human relations on an objective and equal playing field is the beginning of any real friendship.

I always start out, nowadays, any new contact with political commentary, with a clear statement that I value a person's capacity to be both civil and cogent while standing for what values you actually have above agreeing with my stupid opinions, if that's what you think they are.

That's how come I can sorta understand some different views, and also why I can quite clearly explain what I think about them.
