Thoughts on Memo's return?

As I said in the game thread, I think we are just scratching the surface of how good we can be...

At this point, I have no clue what type of role Memo should have upon his return. Obviously he'll be eased in. But will he become an eventual starter? I don't even know where I stand on the subject.

Of course one side is why mess with something that's working so well. While the other is, Memo (at full strength) adds a unique skillset that no other big on our team does.

Curious where everyone stands?

I say, bring him in as a 6th man so he can create instant offense for our 2nd unit... I don't like having him in as a starter... Sorry, but the guy is lazy on defense and Al Jefferson has shown that he can defend one of the best big men in the business tonight in Pau Gasol...

Gasol had to earn every point tonight whereas if Boozer was in there tonight, I guarantee we lose this game... Jefferson is starting to get it, and he's paying off... BIG!!

I think he should come off the bench when he gets back. He and CJ can be the leaders of the 2nd unit and really stretch the floor. This also gives an opportunity to pair Memo up with Big Fes at the same time so we get some defensive help on the block. My biggest thing is AJ needs to stay in the starting 5 because with Deron leading the way it's easier for AJ to know what to do and where to be within the offense. We absolutely need AJ to know his stuff completely by the AS break and help this team become dominant.

Memo off the bench with CJ makes the most sense to me. That 2nd unit will become a major strength with both of them and the added benefit of Watson/Price picking up the energy and playing well to spark some momentum.

I love the thought of Watson, Price, CJ, Okur, Fez (and/or elson). Or Watson, Price, CJ, AK (at 4) and Okur.

Any way you look at it, the Jazz will be better with Memo than we will without him. We will have three solid big men that we can bring off the bench, which should help Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson to stay out of foul trouble. However, if we do eventually play the Lakers with a healthy Bynum in the playoffs, I would start Memo with Al Jefferson to counter the Lakers' twin tower lineup. Other than that, I would keep him off the bench.

Definitely off the bench, don't mess with the Al/Sap starting combo. I could see him closing out halves and games, though, but I see no reason he should play more than 20 minutes a game until the playoffs. They might even want to try and give him just enough to prove he's healthy enough to be traded at the deadline.

Adding Memo is a good problem to have. Plain and simple.

really i always thought a logjam is a bad thing. cus that what this has esssentially become a logjam at pf c possition. cus all deserve playing time sap and jefferson speaks for itself. elson has been a pleasant supprise. and fes had great defensive games. even ak plays some pf and if im not mistaken cj.

but we always heard that a logjam ios a problem.

Having Okur will not be a log jam. He will slide perfectly into the rotation and come off the bench just like he did when the Pistons won the championship!

It's pretty simple; see how it all plays out.

But from where we're sitting, I think it makes sense to just make him the backup C almost all of the time, with his minutes fluctuating depending on his health and matchups where we might see Al at the 4 (against a team like the Lakers if/when healthy). But right now all I/we know is that the priority of role and minutes goes to Sap and Al. Clearly.

I think I'll only want to see him for about 16 minutes a night. Two eight minutes stints from about 2 left in the first quarter to 6 left in the 2nd...do the same in the second half. Not sure if that's realistic based on Sloan's current subbing patterns.

I don't think Memo will be able to play more than 20 minutes a game anyway, so a backup roll will be perfect. His knee won't be at full strength this year, but it should be good enough that he can still come in and play his game. We certainly can use his ability to stretch a defense.

Okur needs to step in as a 6th man, and work his minutes up from there. Ideally Id love for Memo, Millsap, and Big Al split almost equally the minutes. Thats a nice big man rotation,

Hopefully Okur is just practicing that jump shot since he cant move as great as he'd like, so when he comes back, he is an even deadlier spot up shooter. Thatd be sweet.

Memo is Money

@Headtrip - Memo's knee is fine right now. ;)

I really like the lineup GoJazz mentioned. For some teams, they'd make a decent starting five. With Fes clogging the middle, Watson and Price using their quickness, and Memo and CJ hitting outside, they'd pretty be quite formidable. I'd like to add Jeremy Evans to the mix, though. Still don't get why he doesn't get playing time...

While Memo is a solid jump shooter; he has a decent inside game. One of the main reasons he has played on the perimeter all these years was to create space for Boozer. As a second unit player he can be a very valuable post player while still jumping outside for the occassional 3-pointer.

And yes his defense will probably still range from mediocre to horrid - but how many back-up 5's in this league can light up the scoreboard?

Memo's ideal role has always been that of a strictly complimentary player (but a great one) that either comes off the bench or plays next to a defensive ace to make up for his non-existent help D. If he recovers, this could be just what the team needed in a strange way.
