Utes 2011 Football Discussion

I was impressed with the defense (regardless of how good or bad Pitt's offense may be). The fact that EVERY Pitt offensive possession ended in either a punt or a turnover is something to feel encouraged about.

On the flip side, as impotent as Pitt's offense was, we should have had that game in hand long before late in the fourth quarter.

Some bad news -Dallin Rogers is out for the year with a knee injury, at first look it didn't seem like anything but on the instant replay his leg bended pretty bad, that's football for you.

Hopefullly we can get DeVonte back for the Cal game.

It was a nice defensive win but yeh I would like to see our offense move the ball more, get this man some more holes to run through..

One of the scariest sentenced a Ute fan can hear: First and goal, Utah. Their inability to get it into the end zone has to end soon. Right? Right?

Well, at least Hays didn't screw it up.

White is really good.

I'm curious, if Anderson was just some bum instead of a well known coach from U of U, think he'd be facing more heat? Utah St. was supposed to "turn the corner" this year. If anything, they've taken steps backward. That team, not BYU or Utah, is the team that is most underachieving now.

I haven't watched USU since the Auburn meltdown but it seems odd a defensive minded coach would have a below average defensive team and this is what his 3rd year with the team? Whittingham is a defensive mind as was Gary with the Utes but obviously hasn't worked out as well as it did for Whitt in his HC gig.Obviously having a strong defense is huge, as evidenced today by Utah who's offense looked downright unwatchable for moments in todays game but a ugly win is a win none the less.

How many times are you going to post the same crap about USU?

Weren't they 4-8 last year? Sure, if you're an Aggie fan you would prefer they start finishing games off, but if they end up 6-6, 7-5, or 8-4 coupled with all the close games they have been playing, that counts as turning the corner to me. I think they'll get there.

They really could have had a very solid season if they could finish out games.

That's seriously how I felt about BYU when Jake Heaps was the starter earlier this season.

I don't think Pitt will want to schedule Utah anytime soon considering our success against them..

Too bad because I do enjoy beating Mark May's team

And I remember sitting next to a loudmouth Pitt fan at the Fiesta bowl, guy wouldn't shut up until the Utes made him.

Yeah last game both times they got first and goal they had a penalty on first down (one was the infamous LT John Cullen been getting bad penalties all year) and to make it worse the second time it was first and goal it was setup by the defense sacking and forcing a fumble only to have the penalty a horrible sack that looked like Hays just gave up and waited for the sack instead of throwing it away or just falling down and that very sack led to yet another Cullen penalty (personal foul late block/hit) that knocked them out of FG range.

Obviously the players need to clean it up and execute better but I think the TO's have them playing scared but it also seemed to come from the coaching staff this week as well, in the form of play calling and playing not to lose.
That sack of Hays I just mentioned is a perfect example if he was playing tentative you just fall down cause you don't want to take a bad sack or make a mistake like fumbling. Or he throws the ball away instead of forcing it like he had been but instead he just sits there kinda hunched (not looking down field to pass it what so ever) bracing himself for an eventual sack and so Pitt's D trying to strip the ball led to Cullen coming over and gets a late hit/block as a result. If he would've done anything but what he did the Utes come away with another FG (yes not a TD but better then going from first and gold to being out of field goal range).

So again I think that kind of decision making from the players is two things, them being overly selfconscious of the TO's and it being in the coaches heads as well and into the coaches play calling.

Utah should transfer to the Big East. Damn. Pac12 would sign off on that in a heartbeat, too.

It was good to see Utah finally get a win over an AQ team. Piling up wins against the non-AQ mid-major teams like Montana State and BYU is not going to get it done if the program is going to take a step forward. They need to stop scheduling patsies like that and get some real teams on the schedule.
