Utes 2011 Football Discussion

I wonder if Blechen or Christopher are considering going into Whit's office and saying "Hey coach, I was a QB when you recruited me..."

I love watching the Utes lose, really I do.

For some reason I can't delete the attached thumbnail... Oh well, I tried.

I'd be surprised if there weren't Utah fans that actually are gay. Conversely, there couldn't be any BYU fans who are - with the church frowning on it and all...

Not true. I heard dutch likes a good old fashioned Rusty Trombone as much as the next gay guy, and I'm positive that Duck plays the **** flute. (he's quite the musician)

I didn't know what a Rusty Trombone was. I had to look it up.

Egads.

yeh I was thinking the same thing, watched some highlights of Blechen in high school was pretty impressed

Wynn's not going any where. The coaches think he has that mental block like Whittingham said. If they don't stick with him, that only makes it worse.

I agree that Wynn isn't going anywhere.......for now. Whit/Chow are smart enough to realize once you start messing with your QB situation, you're just begging for instability and losses. QB indecision is easily the quickest way to ruin your football team. With that being said, if it is a "mental block" with Wynn, I don't think Whit is going to let an entire season go down the drain for his entire team because 1 guy can't get over the hump.

As bad as Wynn was agaisnt USC, even I have to admit it was a mild improvement over his Montana State game. If he comes into the BYU game and takes a few more babysteps forward, I would guess he's bought himself some more time. However, if the BYU game is a step backwards for Wynn, Utah has a bye week before fully entering conference play and I have to wonder if Utah won't toy with the idea of using the extra week to get Hayes or Shreve more reps with the 1st team.

So it's better to stick with the wrong guy than to nip a problem in the bud? I agree that it's better to commit to a guy, but it's early and there is still time to make things right.

Whit is closer to the situation than I, knows Wynn's abilities better, and is in touch with the team's take on the whole situation, so I would be out of line to second guess him. But IMO, the team is more important than Wynn, and sparing his delicate little feelings.

I've heard Wynn described as the Tim Wakefield of college football, his throws look ugly but still can be effective

btw some great shots of last nights game on this guys website:

Wynn is garbage. Utah wins despite him. He'll get credit for that long TD pass last night, but he had all the time in the world thanks to some great pass protection. Credit goes to both. Utah desperately needs a good QB in the years to come.

All Wynn troubles aside, Utah has to like where they're sitting going into the bye week. Obviously you have to love where they're at defensively and now with the running game emerging as well as Devonte Christopher and Dres Anderson making plays in the passing game, you have to start to feel pretty good about their direction on offense as well.

Still lots of worry about Wynn, but I'd have to say that Chow/Brian Johnson have helped the kid to the point where you can see bits of improvement each week since the opener. There's still some issues with him, and there probably will be all season long to some degree, but I think this team is talented enough overall to make a pretty good run over the next 9 games.

Hopefully the offense can use the bye week to tighten things up and we see even more improvement in 2 weeks when Washington comes to town.

I'm almost thinking that the bye is coming at a bad time. I'd like to see them have another game to build on the thrashing from Saturday.

I was very very happy with the O-Line there best game of the season by far as far as pass protection, the running game can be argued was a bit ineffective until the game was starting to get out of hand. That was my main point about Wynn he may not be up to where we'd all like him to be but if the O-Line can pick it up it will help mask that.
Oh and have I mentioned I loves me some Dres Anderson and warming up on Jake Murphy.

Oh yeah and I almost forgot about the OLB/DE Trevor Reilly, I remember him last year being underweight so they couldn't use him much and same goes for this year I guess. But Coach Whit was saying they put in a 3-4 situational package together so they could get him on the field.

i thought it was strange we have a entire month between home games

5 games in october, would have been nice to have a bye in the middle of that month

watching Washington play Nebraska tells me that game won't be as easy as i'd like coming off a bye week

Washington hung with them for quite awhile but I'm still not sold on them. Looking over some of their stats from the first 3 games it's clear to me that their defense can be exploited. They gave up well over 400 yards passing to Eastern Washington and let Nebraska run for 300+ on them. For me, it boils down to how Utah handles Polk. He's one hell of a running back and has had 3 very productive games thus far. Whit's bread and butter is stopping the run first and foremost. Best case scenario is Utah getting a few early scores while keeping Polk in check and forcing Washington into pass-first mode.

As far as the bye week, I don't know if it's good timing or bad timing. From a fans point of view, it's absolutely amazing to have 2 full weeks to bask in the glory of the 54-to-10 beatdown. As far as if it's bad for the team or not, one could argue either way. Does it hurt Utah's offensive momentum, or does the extra week help an offense that still has some work to do? Who knows.
