Utes 2011 Football Discussion

Langi played on Special Teams, obviously that should end any discussion about reshirting. IMO I think thats the right call. White looked amazing last night and I think he's going to be a bright spot but I was really bummed out by Vakapuna. Dude showed nothing out there. They'll need Langi this year before it's all said and done. In fact, with how horrid Wynn looked, they'll probably need as many RB's to step up as they can get. I don't think there's any "major" problems on this team with the exception of Wynn. Too bad that if your QB is your biggest problem, it can derail your entire season.

Not feeling very good right now about the next few weeks........

I'm not sure if Utah's going to be any good this year, they did look like they had some huge holes, but I think we'll know at SC. They'll be up for that game and they'll be showing as much of the playbook as they have. It seemed like you guys were just playing kind of ho hum, though Montana State did seem to be quite a bit better than your average cake walk game. We'll know if your corner backs are any good with Barkley throwing at them. We'll know if your O-line can pass protect by how they play against against SC's front line guys.

I don't know that I would redshirt Langi after all now. It seems like your ground game might be your best weapon this year, and he would be a better #2 option than Vakapuna I think. Might be worth going through the growing pains with him right now.

Exactly, I don't know how to feel about this team until the USC game. Even if we won this game by 5 Td's it wouldn't really make me worry less about next weeks game. I do worry a lot about Wynn, he missed a lot of practice and it showed in the first game. I think he does have the physical ability but I question his mental ability. We do need Wynn at his very best next week because USC's talent will put points on the board against us. Vakapuna showed to me he break some tackles but I don't really see what else he brings to the table, Langi or maybe even Thretton should challenge for that No.2 spot.

tragic note...
Wife of Utah football player dies in car accident

SALT LAKE CIY (ABC 4 Sports) - The Utah football team is reeling today after learning that teammate Ron Tongaonevai’s wife Janelle died in a car accident last night in West Valley City. The accident occurred at 10:30 p.m., about an hour and a half after the conclusion of Utah’s game against Montana State.

“Our hearts go out to Ron and families and friends on both sides of the marriage for the tragic loss of his wife Janelle,” said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. “This is a devastating loss for everyone involved in our program. Our players and staff are grieving for Ron and our top priority is to give him our support.”

A team tribute and funeral plans are in the works and will be announced later. The team will hold meetings and watch film of its MSU game today as planned, although as Whittingham said, “All of our thoughts and prayers are with Ron, and it’s very difficult to concentrate on anything else.”

Tongaonevai, a junior defensive lineman from West Valley City, and Janelle were married in the summer of 2010.

They showed that blocked punt on PTI yesterday I know I always enjoy seeing the U getting any attention on ESPN.

Also I don't usually watch much college sports outside of the U but I kept finding myself flipping back to that TCU vs. Baylor game last night, wow what a good game. Can't decide if TCU played poorly or if Baylor is actually good this year, well even though Baylor tried to blow the game with several bone headed personal fouls.

It's USC week suckas!

Barkley looked really good yesterday, not so much the whole team. Can your secondary handle 40 + passing attempts?

Just checked gametimes. BYU/Texas and Utah/USC are only a half hour apart. Not cool. I was going to watch both of them fully.

Just DVR the BYU game. :)

And if you don't have a DVR get with the times.

Good question. If USC airs it out all game long Utah's D-line needs to live up to the billing and make Barkley pick himself up off the ground all day long. While they're young, I think Utah's secondary can hold it's own if the front 7 is getting pressure. If not, it's gonna be a long day.

Still extremely confused about this game. While USC looked pretty good in the first half, they looked average at best in the second. Utah looked ok in the first quarter but after that I thought Montana State played right with us the rest of the game. If this game were in Utah I'd have a slightly better feeling. I just want to see us play well. When the schedule came out I chalked this one up to an L and after our first game I still have that feeling.

I'll be ok if we play better yet still lose since this game really doesn't take away from the goal of making the Pac-12 title game.

Does anyone have the 01 Las Vegas Bowl where we beat USC on VHS? I would love to see that game or just see highlights from it in the least. I remember going to the game and thinking we were going to lose but I remember our defense dominated that game, they had like 1 rush yard or something? that was the last time we faced them i believe.

If 90% of those attempts are to 1 receiver, and there is no rushing game whatsoever, Utah should be able to handle that. Hopefully Jordan Wynn can find his game. If Jordan Wynn finds his game and USC doesn't find a rushing game or any other receivers, this will be a blowout win for Utah.

Utah couldn't blow out Montana St. but they can blow out USC.

Right.
Utah beat Montana State by 17 points, what exactly do you consider a blowout? Beating someone by 3 scores and leading by at least 3 scores from start to finish is a blowout in my book.

But I said if Jordan Wynn finds his game anyway. If Jordan Wynn still sucks Utah probably won't blow them out.

The point is, Utah looked great everywhere except at QB. And we know Wynn can play, he just has to find his game. USC, on the other hand, was pretty bad in all facets of the game except QB and 1 receiver. They have way more problems that need to be fixed than Utah.

If neither team fixes any problems, Utah probably wins but doesn't blow them out. If Utah fixes their one problem, and USC doesn't fix anything, Utah blows them out. If USC fixes all of their problems and Utah doesn't fix anything (the least likely scenario) then USC probably wins but not a blowout. If Utah fixes their one problem and USC fixes some of their problems but not all of them (the most likely scenario) then depending on what problems USC actually fixes, Utah wins, probably wins comfortably and possibly a blowout.

USC got dropped out of the polls today, i don't know if that will make any difference, probably not

There's part of me that believes USC may actually be a pretty bad team. They were a 5 loss team last year and lost some seniors this year who decided to take advantage of the NCAA's offer to transfer elsewhere and not have to sit a year. I think I read somewhere that against Minnesota they only posted 5 seniors in their entire 2-deep roster. With those defections, and the relative youth of the roster, I think it's more than reasonable to wonder if they're even worse than the 5 loss team from a year ago. Plus, they're coach is an absolute moron.

Then I remember that they still have Barkley and NFL talent spread across the roster and it makes me hold off on proclaiming their demise. Either way, Utah needs to compete in this game. Period, no excuses. Whit acted pretty disgusted with the passing game last week. I know there's not much behind Wynn but I wouldn't be suprised if he's on a very short leash Saturday.

I know Utah wants to redshirt Tyler Shreve but they may have to put him in and take their chances. Shreve may make some mistakes, but at least there would be the threat of some downfield passes. I'm afraid with Wynn we're gonna see 8 men in the box all season long and have no way to make defenses pay for stacking the box.

^ agreed

i just bought NCAA 12 on ps3 and found someone who updates the roster with names/coaches and playing as the utes has been pretty fun

Look guys, I'm a Utes fan, but I'm not a homer 'tard. Without those turnovers that led to touchdowns, that Montana St. game is uncomfortably close. And no, I wouldn't call 3 scores a "blowout".
