Utes 2011 Football Discussion

I will LOL, Giggle, Cackle, and ROTFLMMFAO if the Utes end up changing their name, logo, etc. This makes me hate BeanClown even more, which I didn't think was possible.

Oh ya, on topic:

Utah got LUCKY. I haven't been that upset for a very long time. Thank goodness it lasted 10 seconds until I changed the channel.

Translation:
Trout got Lucky (with his wife) while getting lucky it made her stomach upset for a long time but she was happy it only lasted 10 seconds. But lets be honest Trout even though you typed 10 seconds we know the general rule on things like that is to divide by three so it was more like 3.3 seconds, luckily for you're wife not so much for you.

This whole post makes little, to no sense at all. But of course, what would I expect from a slobbering drunk who cheated his way through his G.E.D. and roots for Anti-Indian bigots?!

You make me sick, sir.

No joke when I posted this the other day I was recovering from a cheap shot to the back of my head, really not sure how or why I got hit first or at all other then the person next to me was the main target. Once I got up and realized what going on and pushing people off me I tried to help the other guy who had a few people on him, mind you I'm a 6' 160pd skinny non tough guy (to say the least) so maybe it was me being dazed or the adrenaline but while getting people off me and helping the other guy I got hit and kicked a few more times (in the back and back of the head) but not a single one actually hurt or dazed me. 2 days later I'm sore and got several goose eggs on my head but not bad really at all especially considering the other guy had to get staples in his head from the bar stool the 3 a holes used to cheap shot us from behind.

Anybody got anything on any possible OC names? I figured if A-Rod was just going to be promoted, you'd have seen Whitt make that call fairly soon after the bowl game. I'm guessing that the fact that we still have yet to hear anything mostl likely means Whitt is looking for somebody outside of the current staff.

Will it really matter though? You guys are F'd in the A for the foreseeable future thanks to your QB situation.

You're probably right (which really pisses me off), but I still have higher expectations for next year. A couple of reasons:

-That defense could be downright nasty. The names of all the guys returning has been posted a few times so I'll spare you all of that, but IMO this could be one of the best Defenses we've ever seen from K-Whitt.

-On offense they obviously have John White returning, Kelvin York should be a great back-up (I'm guessing Langi RS's), Every WR of note is coming back plus Baylor transfer Josh Gordon will be in the mix. I believe 3/5ths of the starting O-line will be back as well.

Long story short, I think they'll be a better team next year. Just how good of a team will depend on what happens with the QB spot. If Wynn is healthy enough to go, I think it's safe to say that he probably won't last the entire season. That's why I was glad to see that both QB prospects are coming to the U early enough to participate in spring ball.

Starting a true freshman is probably never "Option A" for any program, but Utah may have what it takes to pull it off next year. A great formula if you have to do that is give the kid a strong defense, great running game, a stable full of talented WR's and don't ask to do too much too soon.

Either way, I don't see the QB situation being as messed up as it was this year. I guess we'll see.

I think it's A-Rod's job to lose. If it's not A-Rod, it must be a pretty big name.

Whitt made the comments about them promoting from within. Not only that, but A-Rod was pretty decent in that position last year. If a big name like Chow didn't fall into Utah's lap, A-Rod would probably still be the OC.

Even though it hasn't been made public, Schramm must have known something or he wouldn't have abruptly left for Fresno State.

Honestly, I'm fine with whatever. Chow sucked at calling plays. A-Rod was better last year, and will probably be much improved next year. So if it's A-Rod, that's an improvement. If it's someone even better than A-Rod, I'm obviously happy with that too.

It's not all that bad.

This year, the QB situation was pretty bad. But next year Chase Hansen and Travis Wilson are both way better than Jon Hays. And if Jordan Wynn ever plays again he's way better than Hays too. In addition to that, Jon Hays is also a whole lot better than he was at the start of the season.

Remember, Jon Hays came into this season barely 1 step above a true freshman (and not even a very talented one). He had never taken a D1 snap. He practiced with the second unit. He was suddenly thrown into the lineup with the starters in the middle of a game. Heck of a way to start your college career. The next week, in his first ever start, the Utes got blown out against Arizona State.

Of course he started out pretty bad under those circumstances. He got better and better every week though. And although he is still a crappy QB and should be no better than 3rd string (at best), he is a whole lot better today than he was against Washington, Arizona State, and Cal. I honestly think if Utah had a decent OC, Hays would have looked like a decent QB later in the season.

I'm not saying the guy would have been all conference, NFL caliber, or anything remotely close. But I think he would have at least looked decent and not completely horrible.

So I don't think our QB situation is that bad at all. It's not like USC's QB situation. But it's still pretty nice. 2 highly touted freshmen coming in, injury prone but capable when healthy Wynn, and the improving with experience Hays.

All in all, next year's QB situation is much, MUCH better than this year's QB situation. And the RB and WR situations are about as good as it gets.

I haven't seen Whit's quotes about promoting from within. With that being said, the reason Kyle was even talking with Chow last season was because he was looking for some references on guys with experience in the West Coast Offense. The decision to move away from the spread and into the West Coast was a very deliberate move by Kyle. Chow falling into his lap just sort of happened after the fact.

I also disagree that ARod did a good job in 2010. I already know you and I disagree on that, but I think ARod's offenses put up huge numbers against awful defenses and wet the bed as soon as they faced a defense in the top 30. Utah has now been recruiting pro-style QB's for the past year. It would be a horrible mistake IMO to flip-flop and go back to the spread after one year. It will make Utah look extremely unstable and could cause players like Travis Wilson to de-committ. So if Utah stays the course with the west coast, (as they should) it then raises the huge question of whether or not ARod is ready to run that offense after only a year of learning.

ARod is a spread guy, plain and simple. You don't abandon the pro style offense after 1 year and assuming you keep it, you certainly don't put a guy in charge of a Pac 12 offense who only has 1 year experience in that system.

Utah to keep logo, for now

https://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/utes/53223814-89/circle-feather-logo-utah.html.csp

The University of Utah and its athletics department has decided to keep the circle and feather logo.
In a statement, the university said, the school “Periodically review the use of the circle and feather logo out of sensitivity for native tribes across the country as well as Utah fans. At this time, the athletics department will continue to use both the circle and feather and the block U logos.”

Your statement that "ARod's offenses put up huge numbers against awful defenses and wet the bed as soon as they faced a defense in the top 30" is completely false.

Lets revisit...
Utah's offense crapped out against the top 2 defenses in the nation (TCU and Boise State). It also crapped out against the #19 defense (Notre Dame) in the horrible weather, on the road.

Utah put up 27 points against the #15 defense (Pitt), and put up 28 points against the #26 defense (Air Force) on the road.

So in short, Utah got shut down by the top 2 defenses in the nation. They also went on the road, in horrible weather, against the #19 defense in the nation and got shut down there too. They had no trouble moving the ball and scoring against anyone else, including some of the top defenses in the nation.

Salty, do you honestly believe that Boise St. had the 2nd best defense in the nation last year? Most of those stats were compiled against very horrible WAC competition. There were probably 7+ SEC schools that had better defenses yet ranked lower. The problem with clinging to stats to make your point is that with the wide varity of strength of schedules, you're going to get skewed stats.
