What's new

Wes Mathews or Gordon Hayward

I like Wes, but his ceiling as a pro is Jason Terry. That's not a bad ceiling and his contract, now that the bonus is paid, is very reasonable. But he's a matchup guy you don't want out there every single night for 30 plus. He's a 20 some nights, 25 most nights, 30 plus some nights guy. I'm not as wildly excited about Hayward as others, but the difference between him and Wes is he absolutely can be the type of 2 or 3 that plays 30 plus every night regardless of matchups. A genuine starter for any team, not an opportunistic one on the right team.

I would peg Hayward's ceiling at Granger. I doubt he'll ever be very effective breaking his man down off the dribble, but he can learn to get separation on shot like Granger does. My guess is he turns into something more like Dunleavy. That might sound like an insult, but Dunleavy's 07/08 campaign was what he should have turned into without the injuries, and that would be a heck of a player to have.

I suspect the last couple offseasons finally changed the Jazz free-agent philosophy forever. KOC learned that it's not worth the risk of getting nothing for valuable players who's contracts expire. Even role players like Darko are getting ridiculous offers. This is why DWill was traded and why KOC should continue to trade valuable players prior to their contract expiring with the Jazz (unless the KOC considers the Jazz close to a title). Of course, the new CBA could change the free agency process too.

I think EVERY team had a wake up call with "The Decision" and then the subsequent turmoil in New Orleans and Denver. To Chris Paul's defense, he juts shut up and continued to play. Denver and Carmelo let it become a huge distraction. Though we can all point and say the Jazz playerd worse without Deron and Denver actually improved with the assets they got for Carmelo, I think that might be reversed in a few years. Gallinari and Chandler will never be franchise players. Favors MIGHT. And there are 2 additional lottery picks to come.

You're right, though. I think we'll see more trades by small-market teams as their key players are entering contract years, unless the new CBA addresses the issue.

There is no doubt that Matthews is a stud. If we could trade Memo's expiring and CJ for him I would do it in a heartbeat. I think he and Hayward would complement each other incredibly well.

That said I think Hayward has the higher ceiling. If it one or the other I would take Hayward in our current situation.
