What's new

Game Of Thrones

So it's official, the sixth book will not be published in 2015.

The television series will outpace the books and it's likely that the television series will come to a conclusion before the seventh book is even being written. Well, maybe not completely, but it may be 5-6 years after the television series ends that book readers will get the seventh book.

I'm pretty bummed about that. I'm also sceptical about where they go with the series. They just used up the best parts of the entire book series and I think starting this season they're going to have to add a lot of their own stuff to make the show work. I suppose after next season they'll be completely on their own and the show and the books will be two completely different things. Might actually be a good thing as books four and five simply don't have the punch that the first three books had. No reason to believe GRRM is going to deliver book three quality in book six and my guess is that the fat ******* will be dead before he finishes book seven.

sad

When do you think the series will outpace the book? This season? Next season?

GRRM should just stop writing the books and spend more time working with the producers outlining stories and plots for the next 10-20 years IMO. No point wasting all that time slaving away on the books crafting each word when he can provide 20 years worth of entertainment for the masses who don't have time for books.

Well there were 24million copies of the books sold, divide that by 5 books, so roughly 5million people would have read the books.

Compare that to the average viewership of 14million per episode (peaking at 18million), not counting DVD sales afterwards, and it's easy to see there are at least 3-4 times more viewers than readers.

Yes he should finish the 7 books to give some 'closure' to the readers. But after that he should spend the rest of his time here on earth working on stories and plots for 10, 20, 30 more years of this Television Series which frankly is a Godsend.

Sad, but shouldn't be surprising to anyone. Martin's been taking 5-6 years between books, so it was pretty obvious that the show was going to end up outpacing the books at some point.

But as you say, books 1-3 were great, and 4-5 were meh. So I'm not actually super-concerned. I think the show actually has a chance to improve the story by trimming a lot of the fat that Martin's thrown on in the more recent books.

When do you think the series will outpace the book? This season? Next season?
I'm sure they'll stick to what's in the books for this season (there's enough uncovered material to do multiple full seasons if they wanted), but next season I have to think they'll go beyond the books.

You're really missing the point. Martin has no interest in doing that. The whole reason he wrote A Song of Ice and Fire was because he was tired of the limitations of TV writing. He wants to tell the stories himself, not outline them for other people to write, or write an ambitious and detailed script that has to be cut back for budget or time reasons. You can do all the math you want about how doing TV would entertain more people, but ultimately Martin's time is his own, and he's not going to spend it doing something he's not interested in doing. He doesn't owe anything to the world.

You are retarded, learn to read.

So how much of A Dance with Dragons will the next season cover? Will they cram 2 books into 1 season? I don't think that would be wise.

Book 4 and 5 are on a parallel timeline. They've actually gone into that timeline a bit already.

I think it was book 4 that covered several characters that you might consider minor characters.

Yeah, I know that. What I am trying to say is that they shouldn't put it as one season. They can take storylines from the book 5 but they shouldn't completely use it.

I figure they'll go more or less chronologically

And then maybe they can turn book six into two seasons

Lol, the more Martin writes better the show will be. I seriously fear they will go downhill as they continue without books.

I didn't like the way barristan unveiled himself to daenerys in the show. It was way better in the book and lead to better character development for Dany and both Knights.

Also didn't like that shae completely turned on tyrion at joffreys wedding. Although I'm glad the little prick joff is dead. Also joff's wedding in the show was weak sauce compared to the book. In the book it was believable enough to everyone there that he had choked on food that they had his throat opened up to check. The show seems to go pretty heavy handed when subtlety is exactly what made the scene in the book.

Almost done with book 3. Loving them so far and still rooting for danaerys stormborn. Am I the only one expecting a dragons vs others finale?

As far as the possible finale...I think I've spoiled it for myself reading on a GOT forum. But I figure dragons a massive wolf pack and maybe some Dothrakis

What are the scenes that stuck in your mind so far from the show?

Mine's got to be that scene in the first season when Daenerys had to unwillingly sleep with Drogo when she was sold to him for marriage. Just the expression on her face... can't seem to get that out of my head for some reason.
