What's new

Tomic offered buyout:

Hmm. This sounds a lot like an agent negotiating for more money to resign his client with his current team. Seriously, if Tomic really wanted to come to the NBA, a $5 million offer -- peanuts for the Jazz -- would have brought him over already.
A.) It's been well documented that the Jazz weren't serious about bringing him over until AFTER hiring both DL and Quin Snyder. The timing is right for him to come now. The last time they could have realistically brought him was back in 2012 - before they hired DL. KOC didn't feel he was ready, and that was when he signed his contract with BC. The rest in between is him becoming one of the best big men in International play.

B.) I guess I read it differently, because the article came across (to me) as if Tomic is using Barcelona to leverage the Jazz into the best rookie deal he can get. The more BC is willing to offer, the more the Jazz would have to pay above that to get him to commit to coming over - that way Utah can't just lowball him. Utah and the NBA is a far more lucrative option. If the Jazz really want him, I don't think it's wrong for him to try to get them to pay (or slightly overpay) market value to get him to come over.

When would the Jazz be able to negotiate with him? like July 1st?

I think they can negotiate any time. He's not a FA. Euro teams don't have any specific negotiating window. For example, Nuggets signed Lauvergne in mid February.

Where does this come from -- CBA?

https://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#51

When a team signs a first round draft pick within three years after he is drafted, they use the salary scale for the year in which he signs (usually the player signs in the same year he is drafted). After three years they have the option of either using the salary scale or signing him as if he was a free agent -- using their cap room or any available exception, with the standard raises. They can only do the latter if the player did not play intercollegiately in the interim. Such a contract must be for at least three seasons, and the salary in the first season must be greater than 120% of the applicable rookie scale amount.

I want to say that I got the info about no team/player options in these type of rookie contracts when the Bulls signed Nico Mirotic this past offseason. I was curious as to how the rules applied to Tomic and Neto (and now Pleiss).

Can someone with better Spanish skills than Google Translate summarize this article for us?: https://encestando.es/el-barca-ya-s...-para-renovar-pau-ribas-y-vezenkov-en-camino/

It's the article the Sportando summary is based on. Appears to go into more detail about Tomic, as well as Pleiss, Hezonja, and even touches on Vezenkov.

Pleiss: he has one extra year on his contract. An offer by an NBA team is unlikely given his poor production during the last season. He doesn't seem a priority for their team.

Hezonja: great talent but immature. NBA is the future for him, specially if selected top 8 or 9. He is likely gone.

Tomic: his contract is over and his asking price seems to be quite high. He is asking for 2 million to start negotiations and Barcelona doesn't want to spend that much. Utah wants him but it's not clear how much they are willing to pay. Things will likely sort out in June.

This makes things interesting. Gobert and Tomic are both strictly 5's, so If Gobert is getting 33 or so minutes a game that only leaves 15 for someone with the stature of Tomic.

We could trim Rudy's minutes a little, and I don't think it's out of the question that you could play these two next to each other for 5 minutes a game in a lot of situations. I really don't think it's going to be an issue to find between 20-25 MPG for Tomic.

My thing with Tomic is - he has to WANTS TO COME AND WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE NBA.

I don't want a guy who's just gonna come and "see how it goes" for a couple of years, and if it doesn't work out go back to Europe. So far his reluctance to enter the NBA tells me he's "comfortable" in Europe and doesn't have a real desire to make the jump, which is what worries me the most.

We can pay him there is no doubt about that and he can also certainly plays. But I don't want him to be here, and be homesick or whatever and be dragging his feet the whole time because we don't need that. Our team chemistry is one of the best thing we've got going for us at the moment and the last thing we need is a feet dragger no matter how talented he/she is.

Really. The bolded part is what concerns me most. Do you know something about Tomic that the rest of us don't?

Depends.

Oh and...boobies.

Um... no.

Sexist. I'm sure we can find female players who are better than Burke.

Tomic was drafted in the 2nd round, #44 overall if I remember correctly, so while I don't know all the rules and stipulations 2nd rounders have much more freedom which is why so many Euro players are drafted in the 2nd round so they're not limited by the 1st round rules.

No you couldnt.

While there are some very good female basketball players, they would get destroyed on an NBA court, and Trey Burke would dominate the WNBA. He's not as bad as he's being made out to be.

Some of you might not know this, but the Jazz actually drafted a female player once. Then found out she was pregnant. True story.
