What's new

Following potential 2015 draftees

Except the fact he was one of the better mid-range shooters in college basketball as a #1 option and hit 46% of his 3pt attempts?

46% on like 30 attempts... I think he can be a good shooter from 15-18 feet but the three isn't there yet.

40+% on 30 shot attempts is a small sample size. He didn't even average one three attempted a game.

He also shot it very well from mid-range on a very large sample size. There is nothing wrong with his shot for what he is. You don't draft him on the expecatatins that he extends his range to the NBA 3pt line as a shooter. He can easily become a corner 3 shooter. Maybe that is it. Who knows? But so far he has made his form work for him in a very successful way.

What about his mechanics are so wrong? His follow through is consistent, his elbow is in, he has a high release, his shoots it fast enough, he gets good arc and rotation. It's not perfect, but it works.

I thought we wanted a stretch four. So how does Portis help us out? By making the paint even more crowded?

He was one of the best midrange shooting PF's in college basketball you dumbass. He shot 46% from college 3, which is about the same distance as a corner 3 in the NBA. He has better range than any of our current bigs. He would help spacing. I wish people would inform themselves on some actual facts before making dumbass statements.

Watching that video, I'd be shocked if he was over 30% from NBA 3 point range. Just doesn't have any touch and shot isn't smooth at all.

Crazy that he isn't a good NBA 3pt shooter yet when he just started shooting college 3's on a limited basis this past year. It's like it's a completely new shot to him or something.

Doesn't mean it will go in from three though.

True, but he has shown the ability to extend his range thus far. He succeeded in extending it his SO year from his FR year. You can't expect overnight success on extending range that quickly.

This just shows you why agents don't usually let videos like these get released. He has one sub-par shooting drill and people are acting like he is a scrub shooter when he has actually shown to be a good shooter.

Nice to see you back track a little there.

Did you watch the video? Its not that its a new shot, its that he needs a new shot.

I'd like to see how he shoots it when he has a year or two of practicing extending his range, not a month or two.

But there is nothing wrong with his form... What would be different?

Not saying it's there. Not saying it will ever be there for certain, but I know he can space the floor in some capacity. I think he will be able to hit the NBA 3 much like Draymond Green can now. If you leave him open he will take them and make enough of them for it to be an efficient shot (depending on the team he goes too and how much they emphasize the development of that skill).

I picked out his weird form in the DX vids. This didn't really sway me and shouldn't sway a smart GM

Backtrack how? Did I ever state otherwise?

HE SHOT 46% FROM THREE HE'S A GOOD SHOOTER.

There are always tweaks to shooting form. Hayward made small adjustments to his shot this year and it worked wonders. I disagree that there has to be some complete overhaul.

His shot is consistent, has arc, has rotation, and he can get it off. Those are the 4 main things you need. It's not like he is Ronnie Brewer throwing his elbow in crazy directions and getting sideways spin. Not everyone has to have picture perfect form to be a good shooter.
