Stupid Pet Peeves

https://www.cnn.com/2013/05/22/tech/web/pronounce-gif/

There you have it, from the creator of the format.

He's an idiot.

Graphics Interchange Format. Hard G.

Not Jraphics.

But, whether or not I'm right is irrelevant. The thread is about pet peeves. This is one of mine. If Jesus Himself comes down from the heavens and declares the pronunciation "JIF", I'll still think you're retarded if you pronounce it that way.

Count me in on this argument. It is a hard G sound due to the words in the acronym.

lin-ucks

But my German background makes me see it is lee-nooks, which is kind of weird. Not to mention the fact that I recently spent a year in Germany working with a lot of IT guys who all pronounced it that way. :)

Ive always heard it LIN-UCKS, with the soft "i".

If I had never heard anyone say it, I would probably be inclined to pronounce it LINE-UCKS.

But I don't feel strongly about it either way. As a graphic designer by profession, I am much more invested in GIFS, since I am dealing with them constantly.

For the record, if someone pronounces it JIF when speaking to me, I don't usually correct them.

But it's named after Linus Torvald, so by your gif argument it should be pronounced line-ucks, shouldn't it?

Good, because you're wrong. :)

But see my Linux reply to loggrad. The fact is abbreviations and compound words can take on a life of their own and don't have to be pronounced like the words from which they sprang.

Typical American hubris. Linus pronounces his name closer to Lin or Lean-us than he does Lie-nus. Are you saying the word graphic comes from a culture that pronounces the g like a J?

lol - that's a pretty poor take on what C said.

Not at all. It is a defense as to why I'm not "wrong" in the context. I didn't deny words take on a life of their own and get changed. You don't need to axe anyone about that. I was just stating that is why I pronounce those words the way I do, which was what the grammar nazi's tricky set-up was getting at. Which is the correct way, by the way.

And the typical American hubris part is the assumption that Linus pronounces his name the same as the Charlie Brown character, which would make Lie-nux a legit option. Being from a different culture he does not.

Yes hah.

Btw in case it wasn't clear, one of my pet peeves is people who pronounce gif with a hard g. :)

Is this the first time in the thread that we've had dueling pet peeves?

Are you saying you pronounce it lee-nux, then? My point is still valid.

Reread my post. That's just about exactly what I said. Generally a compound word gets its pronunciation from the constituent words. In this case Lin or leen is legitimate as the actual pronunciation of the guy's name kind of falls between Lin and leen-us. The Germans firmly pronounced it lee-nooks as I stated before. And I never argued that words don't take on a life of their own, but that doesn't mean that any pronunciation you choose to use is technically or logically correct. Or are you going to argue the same point again coaltoon.
