What's new

Paul George

SO WHY TRADE FOR HIM THEN IF HAVING HAYWARD/GOBERT IS ENOUGH FOR HIM TO SIGN?

No need to give up assets. If he is interested in joining a contender he should want to sign with a team that has players and assets.

Why would he sign here as a free agent?

Free agents of his caliber have NEVER resigned here.

BUT, players of his caliber have RE-SIGNED here.

Little difference.

Utah has a bad rep. It's that simple. You got to get them here before they want to stay here.

Lmao wut? So him being here for a half year is going to influence him that much?

Yup. I'd say a three month tryout is sufficient time to convince a guy to stay here. Much better odds than a one night visit.

Also, this is all moot, because Utah should be going after Butler or Lillard ahead of George. They are better fits and better players. George isn't coming here. He'd be the hardest to obtain, cost the most, and fit the worst.

What if he comes here and that half year isn't enough to properly jell and we get upset in the first round? George leaves and we dealt all those assets for nothing?

He doesnt come here and we make minor trades to upgrade roster. We make it to 2nd round and play well.

He is more likely to sign in the 2nd scenario.

I think this has changed to some degree over the last few years. Multiple players out there (Big Al, Matthews, DWill, Millsap, Marvin Williams, Carroll...) all speak glowingly of Utah, the coaches and FO. Also DL has laid lots of ground work improving relations with agents. It is much less of a thing than it was even 10 years ago.

10 years ago we signed memo and boozer

Yes and no. As far as college football goes, it hasn't really changed. The Utes still battle all the negative crap about Mormons, racism, etc. I'd bet that if Paul George is a free agent from Indy, he will hear the same lines from competing teams.

Whereas if he lives here for a few months, he will at least have first hand knowledge.

That is a big difference. You have to remember, Utah was extremely racist to his parent's generation. That is still recent. That is what comes to mind when they talk about Utah. And now the Church is doing all this anti-LGBT and Transgender stuff...yeah, we still have a rep as being weird because we are weird.

Yes we did. I don't consider Memo an elite free agent though. I just thing the "Utah has a bad rep" thing has gotten better over the last decade.

We are talking the NBA so I don't really care about the college football stuff. I'm well aware of what Utah is. And in NBA circles it's not nearly what it was IMO. Agents like the Jazz FO and multiple players are now out there spreading good word about Utah. That changes perception. How much is really impossible to tell lol.

This ain't playing Madden with the salary cap turned off. If you want to pay three max players, you're getting 12 Withey and Macks backing them up.

That GS juggernaut gets dicier as Steph will get a max contract and Durant has a player option for a year before he gets a max contract. You'll need to be up 20 points with your starters when your bench comes out because you've devoted 90% of your cap to four guys.

Welcome to competing for a NBA title. You need three stars and a bunch of solid, cheap vets. Not cheap young guys. Vets.

I'd rather have Lillard/Butler, Hayward and Gobert maxed out and no cap room than what we have now.

Utah is never going to be the "it" place to go. I just don't buy Utah having a bad rap anymore.
