Burks

This really doesn't deserve a reply but okay. He's explosive, great in transition, great at getting to the rim and good at getting to the line. Unfortunately, injuries come with the territory. In a faster, more uptempo style offense, Alec would be an absolute monster.

He's also a pretty good defender and has greatly improved his 3 point shot over the years. So yeah, Alec Burks can play. He puts his body on the line for the game. That kind of stuff used to be appreciated.

Almost every player is better in transition because the decisions are dumbed down and it's easier to make a play. Good players help the team in a half court setting also.

What you mean is that Burks could put up some points and maybe 'appear' good to the casual fan if he played for some garbage team like the Suns.

He's not a 'pretty good defender,' he's a pretty bad defender.

I could definitely see us struggling to score 95 many a night so Burks, even off the bench, could be a very welcome addition, even if I think he's generally speaking, a pretty mediocre player.

Pretty good defender? He's the worst wing defender on our team by a wide margin. He is great at getting to the rim, he's just horrible at finishing once there.

Hard to finish when you can't lift one of your arms above your shoulder. I think he was a decent finisher before his injuries. Could be wrong since I'm not looking up the stats. He had also become a decent 3Pt shooter (>40% in 2015/16). Rodney Hood busted out last season to 37%.

Don't get me wrong. I think Hood has more potential and he's two years younger. Something has to give, though. Jazz just have too many guards: Rubio, Exum, Mitchell, Hood, Ingles and Burks (not even counting Thabo). Someone will get traded or just let go. But it may not happen until the contract statuses of Hood and Exum are resolved. I think it's significant that Hood and the Jazz have been reported as negotiating, but we haven't heard a thing about Exum. Could be like Favors last season: there's just no way to determine fair value at the moment.

he wasn't a decent finisher before the injury. I just don't buy his fit within the system Quin runs. He's not a passer in a passing offense. He's not a defender on a team based around the defense. Of all the wings you mentioned Burks should be the last off of the bench.

4 out, 1 in. Or make that 3.5/1.5 since Favs can't sit behind the line. If Burks can shoot the 3, he fits offensively. And penetration opens it up for the bigs. I'm actually not sure if Hood OR Burks fits, tbh. Neither are good defenders. If Mitchell turns out to be the real deal AND the Jazz decide he's a SG, can Hood play the 3? Offensively, yes, he can hit the corner 3 (at least I hope he could consistently - that's still an open question, though). But can he defend the 3?

I'd argue the Jazz might be better off keeping and re-signing Burks on the cheap as a backup. And using $20M to sign or trade for and re-sign a legit starting SF, rather than spending $17M - or whatever Hood might extend for - as an undersized, weak defender and streaky shooter.

Hood can run the PNR as the ball handler. I don't think Burks can. Hood is a better defender than Burks although still poor overall. Hood has a better touch on mid range and at the basket. I'm not sold on Hood being more than a rotation wing yet, but he is a rotation wing. I'm not sold on Burks being a rotation wing player on a good team. And Burks is older and has been in the league longer.

I think Burks can run the PNR better -- why, because he is much quicker in beating his man off the dribble. That opens the roller when his man comes to cover. Running the PNR is all about beating your man off the dribble. It's easy to recognize the open man once you do that and your teammate rolls properly.

But Burks doesn't make the pass. And doesn't finish at the rim. It's not a PNR when Burks runs it.

Also no pick as Burks, at least before last year, went away from the pick more than anyone in the league.

We'll see how not being injured affects his finishing. I believe he was in elite territory before last year.

I think I recall him making the pass at times, but if he is not then it's job of the coach to drill it into his head to look for the roller. You're right though he does move away from the pick and instead tries to beat his man one-on-one, a bad habit that I think could be corrected.

Burks was putting forth a semblance of drive and kick game before he got injured. That was what excited me. He still made boneheaded plays like pulling up one step inside the 3 point line but he seemed to be in the right direction. Last time he came back, he reverted to his old habits.

The hate for Burks has become outrageous. Like you, I remember him starting to develop a decent drive and kick game. I also recall his much improved shooting. I also remember us being fairly happy with the contract he got, giving his performance. And I also remember the 6th man of the year talk. He was nowhere near as bad as Cy and Log are arguing.

I am taking a wait and see approach.

Very well said. Who knows how he will return but he was a great asset at one time.

It would help if the guy could find a floater in lane type shot or something that is not so violent that he is always ending up on the floor.

Let's hope DL and Snyder brought this up during the exit interviews. I've never doubted that Alec loves to play and is willing to put in the work. Dude has just had some **** luck with injuries.

he shot 45% from the field that season while averaging 14ppg. A bright spot in a rough season

I don't see Burks being traded ,mainly because he hasn't played healthy in a while. But he's being announced as 100% healthy and reported to really balling this summer. If he shows this in pre season,a good trade would be Burks for Nicola Mirotic of Chicago.Lauri Markkanen is ballen in the Euro Cup and their might not be enough room for Markkanen ,Mirotic and Bobby Portis .
Mirotic needs a new start and Burks if he's got his game back then he might be in the way of Mitchell.
