What's new

Nikola Mirotic

They want a draft pick. They are trying to use the interest in Mirotic (reportedly Portland, Utah, and Detroit as the big 3 w/ Boston and Minnesota as interested) to get a first rounder in a bidding war. They wont do Favors for Mirotic straight up.
We know Boston ain't giving them a pick... (hope I don't jinx that).

It seems like a legitimate possibility that Mirotic gets cut by either the Bulls (doesn't have his option picked up for any number of reasons), or the team he's traded to does indeed acquire him in order to shed salary. He could even ask to be released?

Could the Jazz just go and sign him outright this offseason or next, thus spending 0 assets, and assuring that this team ends the season as poorly as they should at this point?
I don't think that's a possibility at all since at the very least teams would give up an expiring and a 2nd round pick for him.

That's very conditional on a team not picking up the team option next season... I think the Jazz would rather basically trade expiring (Favors, JJ) for Mirotic if Bulls would just cut him.

I'd offer up a heavily protected pick that becomes worthless and roll from there:

Top 20 protected this year
Lottery protected next year
Two second round picks if not conveyed by then (2021 via Washington and 2022 via San Antonio)

Regarding his contract, he's got a great salary for 1.5 years. I think your chance of resigning him after that is fairly high and will give a lot of flexibility.

Isn't the logical deal here a three team one? Favors (maybe JJ too?) going to a contender, Mirotic to us, the contender's late first round pick to Chicago. Not sure who if anyone would fit the bill though. Cavs for sure, but I don't think they have their own pick this year.

You're right that does seem like the most logical deal. The issue fitting it would seem to be salary from a contender.

I'd imagine they want to hold on to their pick but Favors to Cleveland, Frye and pick to Chicago and Mirotic to Utah sounds legit to me.

My goal is to have an ocean of cap space in 2019 along with Mitchell, Gobert, Ingles, and another really nice player if they're a nice asset already. I'm just a little concerned that Mirotic isn't enough to take this team to the playoffs but would be enough to drop the pick five or more spots. Look at the standings, we're in the thick of it for a damn fine pick.

If Chicago is willing to swallow Dellavadova for a pick then maybe Favors to Milwaukee and Milwaukee sends a pick to Chicago. Milwaukee may not trade a 1st for Favors but perhaps if they dump a terrible contract.

Not enough salary. Cavs would have to put Cedi Osman into the pot also, but it doesn’t matter which team he goes to. Would be badass for the Jazz to walk away with Mirotic and Osman, Cavs get a rim protector in Favors (on an expiring) and the Bulls get Frye’s expiring contract as well as the Cavs 1st round pick and the Jazz 2nd round pick. Gotta think everyone would be happy with that result.

We aren't trading a first for him... we may acquire a first with Favs, hood, or someone else that we would give to them.

They want a first... I want a Ferrari... we don't always get what we want.
**** it, I would give em a first

Or a handy

Just wondering (since SLC Dunk is now wrongly implying that Mirotic holds a full no-trade clause): Did we ever come to a consensus here about what the no-trade-unless-team-guarantees-second-year provision in Mirotic's contract means for the Jazz's negotiating power? Which description fits best?

A) Gives Jazz strong advantage over other suitors
B) Gives Jazz modest advantage over other suitors
C) Gives Jazz no effective advantage at all
