Jazz need shooters desperately

Exum is shooting 28% from 3.

He is 0 threat to pull up off the dribble and he isnt good on spot-ups. He's probably the worst shooter in the NBA outside of Roberson.

When you put him and O'neale together on the court it's the ugliest thing in the half-court.

I've been saying we need a bench scorer since early last season. I've never questioned our FO but it baffles me that they can't/couldn't see it. I'm sorry Crowder is a great role player but he's not a legit scoring threat.

Jae's defense has been a bigger problem. I need one more super consistent shooter that Quin will trust. If they can play 3 and 4 and play lockdown defense that'd be great. Tough guys to find.

A sparkplug shooter like Seth Curry would be nice.

I imagine offensive basketball hell is an eternal loop where Exum drives and kicks it to Royce who pump fakes drives and kicks it to Exum.... until one of them dribble of their foot or the shot clock goes off.

There were shooters available in the offseason, guys like Ilyasova, Wayne Ellington, Bjelicia, Belinelli, Seth Curry, McDermott. The one thing I hoped we would do over the offseason was add a shooter with our MLE.

I understand why we did... sort of. We are waiting for FA next year... we wanted to keep Exum long term, so there wasn't really room. We kept and overpaid Favs I think in part because of trade fodder/value.

I was afraid to move on from Exum because of the limited sample size and his potential. I still think he could be a good player but I'm not afraid to move on... the potential aspect is wearing off. As long as he is healthy we can move him for expirings or slightly positive value imo.

I just wonder if it would have been wise to add a guy like the ones listed above or a Joe Harris type and maneuver the salary later. Or I wonder if Bjelica would have taken a one year deal at full MLE with a team option or low guarantee on the second year. It appeared that we did not look around much at all.

I really hope Exum starts playing well so he has some trade value come January.

I think Phoenix or Orlando would send good expiring salary for him if he's healthy and playing at his current "meh" level. Orlando may not though because they are still very much in the playoff picture.

I don't think we get anything for him of real value.

Yeah, DJ Augustin has actually been playing really well for them.

It's hard to really imagine anyone wanting Exum that badly. Like you said, someone might take him for expiring, but I don't think I would give up on him for that unless his 11 million really makes a huge difference in cap-room.

Phoenix probably makes the most sense, but Igor knows first hand how impotent Exum is.

I could see Atlanta being in on that action too... we just need to tell Schlenk that Exum is really similar to Shaun Livingston... he wants all the "poor man versions" of warriors.

Yea Exum has shown flashes because he is finally on the floor. But he is still the exact same player he's always been.

Has added nothing to his game.

i think he has improved... I didn't by his finishing last year, but it's better than it was a couple years ago. The disappointing thing is there are not huge improvements in the two areas he needs most... dribbling and shooting.

I would likely only move Exum if we did a trade that added salary for next year and needed Exum off to do work in free agency. For instance if we traded for Gallo or OP Jr.

If we got offered something good for him I'd do it too obvi.

I really don't see flashes though. I see flashes of defenses making mistakes guarding him. The only real "flash" we get anymore is that he does throw nice lob passes. Everything else is just him using his speed to get by a defender who is slightly out of position. The problem is nothing about Dante's game forces opponents to regularly to be out of position since he can't shoot at all.

Him and Ben Simmons must have hung out too much as kids.

If they can trade for Porter and get off Exum (Favors/Exum for Porter for instance), they can get to 17 million in cap-space next year. If they manage to trade Crowder for an expiring, they can get to 23 million. They could that money to get Dinwiddie.

Being optimistic, say Dinwiddie signs for 18 million a year. Then use the remaining 5 million to sign Garrett Temple. Then the Jazz would have the room mid-level at 4,500,000. That would bring them to 12 roster spots. Minimum contracts like the Niang deal for the final 3 spots.

Dinwiddie
Mitchell
Ingles
Porter
Gobert

O'Neale
Temple
Allen
Niang
Bradley
2019 pick

I have different #s. If we got out of Exum's deal and got Porter I have us at 23M in space ( I have a spreadsheet cuz I'm nerdy AF)

So we could keep Crowder, Porter and have 23M to play with. I include empty roster holds and 1st round pick hold as well.

You are probably forgetting to add on the draft picks cap-hold and the minimum roster cap-holds. When I did it (on capulator) they add the trade kicker as well. I went back and fixed that and the lowest I can get to is 22 million, and that's with waiving the draft pick. It's 21 million with the pick.

We might do better with $23M than full max anyway... not sure Niko is worth the max... I think there are guys in the lower tier (like Dinwiddie) that may represent better value. You also might be able to split it between a couple guys. I like guys like Rodney McGruder that might get close to MLE money that could out perform the deal.
