I get what you're saying and I don't necessarily disagree. I just want to point out that it's probably easier finding a respectable 3&D wing than it is to find a respectable 3&D big. In other words; you might be able to have some version of both if you can grab the 3&D big because the Jazz are already hunting another 3&D wing (and they need to be able to assure them a role and minutes, BTW).
I think people are starting to really take what the Jazz were able to do offensively last year for granted. You get rid of Bogey and that's a fundamentally different attack on offense. You don't just go out and find players of Bogey's complexion off the scrap heap, and I don't know what to tell you if you see a poor-man's Bojan in Niang.
Royce is so important because he does big-man things that we need because we can't find a big that can space the floor and can play defense at the same time. It's not quite that simple but it's more simple than suggesting that we'll just up and replace a great off-ball scorer at 6' 8" that can exploit mismatches in the post. Or that we'll just up and drop the dude that has been the glue of the team for the past 5 years.
Of all of the players, Clarkson and Royce are the least special, and I wouldn't swap them out for something unless they were rarer types than they are. Nance seems to fit that bill.
I think a player like Nance is maybe more rare, but 3&D wings are still at a much higher premium IMO. It's so essential to have good 3&D wings which is Royce is so important to the rotation despite just being above average at both. I do wonder how much better of a perimeter defender and shooter he is than Nance. I think it's probably pretty close. I've also had some thoughts wondering just how much Royce is propped up by this team...but trading him just isn't an option for me. I don't like trading guys if you immediately need someone exactly like him. It's not easy to find 3&D wings. Everyone in the league wants them.
I'm not sure if we remove Bogey it's that much different of attack. I think that Bogey's presence is felt most when we have someone else out. It's not necessarily his fault, but he does get squeezed when everyone is healthy. If it's not him, it's someone else. Obviously there was the wrist injury, but I don't think it's a surprise that he wasn't able to take off last season until we saw some injuries to Mitchell, Conley, ect. When everyone is healthy, someone is either relegated to standing in the corner or they are awkwardly forcing their touches/shots and breaking the offense to do so.
Bogey has had his moments when his post game and individual scoring ability has got us wins, but he's also had his moments where he's killing the flow, forcing things, and giving the other team easy pick 6's. His skillset is additive, but when Mitchell, Conley, Clarkson, Ingles ect are all healthy there are some diminishing returns. It's great insurance for when one of those guys are out, but to if we're going to win everyone has got to be healthy and we've got to address the massive holes on this roster somehow.
If you told me should move Clarkson instead I wouldn't mind it either. That solves the problem too. I just think one of Bogey/Clarkson should go. Having two players who only provide scoring is a luxury that we can't afford. Just doesn't seem like a Clarkson trade is even a consideration, however, and he's getting paid a lot less than Bogey.
