Las Vegas Summer League thread

I dont think that's a huge concern for a backup. Are teams really going to let their guys rack up fouls when Udoka is likely playing?
If he's as good as he's looked in SL, it's easy to let your player 11 and player 12 in the game to rack up fouls against him if he's indeed shooting around 40% ...

You can also play him at the beginning of Q2 and if they keep fouling him then you get in the bonus earlier.

You can manage when he plays if this is the case. It’d be fairly easy.

My favorite part of the commentary on last nights game was Sam Mitchell talking about udokas ft form and saying it’s not bad and not broken. Uhhhh sir… it ain’t fixed either.
His form looks great. It's likely a nerves thing like it is with most people who cant shoot FT's well.

Are teams really going to do that though? Do they want to play against Rudy Gay at center instead? I just don't foresee it being a thing teams are regularly doing unless Udoka is just playing like Thanos out there.

He shot 33% as a senior. Just because his shot is smooth doesn’t mean he’s a good shooter.

I’ve comped him as a poor-man’s CJ Miles but that may have been too generous.

Don’t care about this cat at all. NBA players should be cruising in summer league, even the fringe ones.

We could’ve had either Bane or McDaniels AND Doke. Hughes is junk.
You can always bet against the second round prospects that DL drafted.

His form is no bueno. He starts his shot too low which leads to more potential places it can go astray... he also rushes through it... kinda flings it... it is not smooth at all. He needs to have a coach (go find the Drummond guy) and absolutely buy in and listen to him.

It isn't wonky with his arms going different directions but in its current form I don't see it being consistent enough to be 60% without some technique overhauls.

I mean you play him to start the second and fourth quarters are teams going to want to be in the bonus for 9 minutes of the quarter? Its and end of quarter/game issue that can be managed as a backup... if he was a starter without a competent backup then yeah it sucks to manage. That strategy works when you want Dwight Howard or Shaq off the floor... if its Udoka you can simply change the way you play him or put Gay out there and shrug. Its more a problem when he has a dunk and it turns into two free throw misses... but if he's going up for a dunk hes big and explosive so it likely turns into an And 1 unless you get him early and hard.

I think teams trying to play Dok off the floor (by making him guard up top) is going to be a bigger issue than him getting intentionally fouled.

IDK, I guess I would have to see clips of FT's back-to-back, but his form looked really good to me. Of course it isnt 100% smooth, that's probably the nerves at play, but it's a smooth one motion release without a hitch.

He's already completely rehauled his form from the Kansas days, I dont think he needs to do it again. IT's probably more just getting comfortable with it in game.

Like this FT looks great to me. The form is pretty damn good. Maybe it's a bit rushed and could be slowed down, but it looks good. He just shoots it a bit too hard/flat and hits back iron. There might be like a few degrees he could improve on with his launch angle, but it's very very minor tweaks.

It always looks sped up to me... so not sure it is a nerves thing. it almost looks like a dart throw in a way. The overall form is okay... kinda but the way it speeds up is concerning to me.

A good shooter should be shooting way better than 34% from the college three point line.

His overall field goal% through 3 year in college was 41% btw.

I don't want to overreact, but he's putting up Trey Burke shooting percentages when shooting is supposed to be his main skill. I'm having CJ Miles flashbacks.

Doke looks great… makes a few dumb mistakes but I think he’s playable if Whiteside sucks or gets hurt. Forrest is fine… I want more from him defensively. Teague is kinda fun… Mathias likely gets the two way… he was good tonight when I watched but I’ve been really unimpressed. This summer league team is not super fun.

The main thing that impresses me with Dok is that he breaks up plays on defense. Teams don't want to challenge him much in the paint and are tentative with their passes around him. He's good at getting deflections as well as blocks. He also has a good motor. You can see in this play below how hard he runs the floor.

True at times. You saw hustle in that play but other times he just jogs down. Watch his demeanor after a teammate misses him. He gives up for a couple plays.

To be fair, I would be frustrated as Hell with my teammates if I were Dok. Way too much dribbling into a contested shot with pretty much everyone but Forrest. If you can throw the ball to Dok within 10 feet of the restricted area it is pretty much an automatic basket, in Summer League at least. I'm pretty sure that working the ball effectively to your best weapon is the best skill most of these scrubs can show in summer league. Nobody is interested in watching you brick contested jumpers. Play strong defense than get the ball to Dok. That is how you get an invite to training camp.

Dok has already played 5 SL games already. I think he may be just going through the motions at certain times. I'd like to see the Jazz give him the ball two dribbles out from the rim and see what he can do.

Then gives up a wide open corner 3 to start OT.

Based on summer league so far. Brantley is just plain awful, and Hughes is not good either.

They need to put Brantley out to pasture, and get the microphone away from Sam Mitchell, except still let him call games at the mid-west review.
Yeah, EH's kind of disheartening. Let's see how his thing evolves. Hope he finally put his stuff together at some point.
Brantley's most probably gone after SL or in a few weeks at most. Like the guy, wish him nothing but good things.

Yeah, just give him a post up or two to see what he can do. I kind of hate how adverse Utah is to ever posting up.
