Trade deadline discussion

I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually don't hate this idea.

He'd play some defense, move the ball, make an occasional 3ball and throw a lob or two to our bigs. He knows Quin's system. The alternative would be trading for a guy like Josh Richardson at $13M and have to give up Ingles or Clarkson. I'd rather trade Ingles or Clarkson for a bigger piece.

We have to be 100% certain about our med team or the man would be ded the moment he land in SLC

Cam Reddish and Christian Wood can provide the same length, athleticism and shooting as Grant at a lower cost.
If the reports are true that Reddish is available for a first I’d be all over that. Kid is just scratching the surface and is a functional 3 and D guy now. I doubt the reports are true otherwise I’d have thought a team would jump at that.

he also has some Jordon Clarksonism in him. 33pts tonight with 8 threes after going 1 for 11 over his last two. The kid's just not shy.

I watched part of the game. He doesn’t get to do much with Trae out there… a lot of sitting in the corner and waiting for a pass. Had a couple nice drives. He’s just a live athletic body and his jumper looks pretty pure… if he figures some other stuff out his ceiling is pretty high.

Wood isn’t interesting to me unless he’s the only big on the court, obviously that’s not a natural fit with Gobert.

I’d be interested in Reddish, but I doubt we have the pieces to trade for him.

Wood played next to Drummond in Detroit and Olynyk in Houston. He can play next to another big, even though he's probably more effective on a completely spaced floor. The thing is, he's levels better than Rudy Gay right now.

He didn’t play a lot with Drummond in DET and only took off once Drummond was gone. His numbers were drastically better without him. That year in Detroit is great evidence for my stance on him.

Playing with Kelly Olynyk is not the same as playing with Gobert.

If the Jazz are going to blow their wad (I don’t think we even have a wad), I’m not doing it to get a better version of Rudy Gay who is way more tilted to being a 5 than a 4. No interest in Christian Wood for me.

it's not really an attempted tile run when there are at least 3-4 teams ranked ahead of us and teams know how to beat us.

The thing with Conley was not really to integrate him in an existing system. In fact, we changed our system entirely as we changed 3 of our 5 starters when he arrived so we were trying to work out a system collectively as a group.

Also, teams on a title run make similar changes all the time. 2019 Raptors and 2020 Lakers. Even 2021 Bucks changed their starting PG from Bled to Jrue. I have a hard time coming up with a team that were treading water for a few years and, without making any major changes to their roster at all, all of a sudden went from second round exit to nba champ.

It is an attempted title run this year -- emphasis on attempted. I think this is the last ride with this core for sure unless we reach the finals (maaaaybe WCF). The rent (aka the tax bill) is too damn high to take a proven pseudo-contender into next season. I mean, Tony Jones is already on record in the Athletic as saying we may trade Gobert if we flame out again this year.

I think it's wishful thinking that adding one defensive piece at the deadline is going to make a major difference. The problems we have that prevent us from being a real contender are as much philosophical as they are personnel-driven. Rearranging one deck chair might increase our chances by half a percent or something. That's not to say we shouldn't jump on a deal if one makes sense to slightly improve our odds this season and gives us a long-term piece and therefore a head-start on retooling around Don in the offseason.

If we hit shots and get favorable playoff matchups, it's hypothetically possible we can win it all. I guess we just have to hope for that, and if it doesn't happen, give the roster a makeover around Don in the offseason.

It's pretty crazy that we had 2 players that deserved the 6MOY award last year, and now both players have been so inconsistent this year.

I just looked it up and Jordan Clarkson had a pre-All Star break efg% of 55%. This year he is at 47%. We are basically living and dying by Jordan Clarkson making shots. He is 51% efg% in wins and 39% in losses.

Joe went from a 65% efg% last year to 58% efg% this year. Honestly his shooting last year probably wasn't sustainable. The bigger deal is his ast%, reb% , and usg% are all down this year. His PITP are also way down this year so far.

I think/hope one or both of them will turn it around at some point this year.
Crazy informative stat there. The defense is decent but not good enough when we are chucking.

I have seen Jordan reinvent himself. He is passing more. Driving more. And its bringing his shooting back up so that may be the difference but if not... eeek.

Brogdon is absolutely a better defender than Conley, not to mention 5 inches taller. He's averaging more assists and rebounds than Conley as well. He's a much better perimeter disruptor and he can body up bigger guards. He's being asked to do a lot on that pacers team so he's not like a defensive specialist or anything but if he came here he'd pretty much instantly be our best perimeter defender. He's also younger than Conley. We'd be wins ahead, and better in the playoffs, if we could magically swap Conley for brogdon.

Conley puts forth the effort and gets some accolades "for his age", but the fact is in the playoffs when we are constantly facing bigger guard lines were cannot hang defensively because our guards are too small. It's been exploited again and again, to the tune of multiple 50-point games from Murray just 2 years ago. Brogdon would provide the size we need at the guard spot.
Conley took 8 months to START to be effective in Quins system. If we swapped him for Brogdon this trade deadline, kiss goodbye to a deep playoff run.

After the playoffs things could change.
