Trade deadline discussion

Smart isn't a perfect player, but man he gets disrespect.

Do y'all realize he averages more assists per game than Conley this year? I'm not saying he's a better facilitator or better PG, but c'mon. It's not like he's total crap at running offense or passing the ball.

Also consider that Boston has two ball dominant players also on the roster with Tatum and Brown. Conley pretty much shares the ball with one other ball dominant player at a time (Don or Clarkson).

I dont think Smart is that great of a fit. Actually kind of a ****** fit in a lot of ways, but he provides something the Jazz need. The fit is weird IMO.

He's a ****** off the dribble shooter.

He's a ****** scorer.

He's a ****** pick n roll player.

He's mediocre as a C&S player

His offensive basketball IQ is pretty poor for a guy who has as much usage as he does.

But he provides intensity and D and the Jazz do need it. Unless he's just super cheap I'm not a huge Smart fan. I think the Jazz would probably be better off just getting a guy who is net neutral on both ends to replace JC.
He’s a perfectly fine pick and roll player. He’s more or less about as good shooting off the dribble and scoring as Royce is, but he wouldn’t be asked to do that much. Not disputing that he’s an odd fit and the inadequacy on offense would be obvious and drive this entire board insane within a month.

I searched my name and post with Smart and Championship in it and got nothing.

I dont think I've ever been super Pro-Smart. I'm just very Anti-JC right now.

My position for the last few months has just been replace JC with a net neutral player and that remains the case.

If Smart is free (like JC swap straight up) then I'd probably be OK risking it. But that probably isnt the case so it just makes more sense to me to do a smaller move.
I think you are right on JC. The issue is I doubt the Jazz would just dump JC... so you kind of need to get something for him if you send him off. Smart is an easy guy to sell to the locker room, coaching staff, fanbase... won't have to sell him to the front office obviously.

If there was something else I think we could get for JC I'd do it. I think Smart defensively is about as good as a fit as you can get. I think he can get on hot streaks (kinda like Jae) that will become a huge boost. His ****** offense is replacing JC's volume bad offense so I don't see a huge drawback there. I just think we are the team that has to give some "stuff" to make it work. I think Smart's market is way bigger than JC's unfortunately.

He plays with Schroeder as well, who basically fills the scoring off the bench role JC does here. Just because he isn’t a dribble it up the court and initiate the offense kind of player does not mean that he can’t do it at all.

Offensively I think the drawback is potentially large depending on how Smart decides to play. If Smart cost me a 1st round pick vs just getting a dude like Justin Holiday for JC straight up (just giving an example, idk how possible it is) I would probably lean towards the more conservative trade getting Holiday.

He may not be asked to do those but he is going to do them. Sometimes a lot. His tenacity which makes him great on D gets the better of him on offense. He gets stubborn a lot.

The thing that could work out though is we play a sort of advantage ball and Smart is a do-**** player. If he just attacks in those situations where he doesn't need to break defenses, it could be more positive than not.

I agree... I'd do the Holiday deal instead. I just don't think they have interest but I might be too close to the situation.

Out: Ingles, Royce, Butler, the OKC-owed first rounder with opposite conditions, that converts to two seconds.

In: Morris, Ibaka.

Then trade for Smart.

It’s all fantasy, but this is a message board, after all.

If we wanted to, we could just use our exception to take Holiday. That would mean a ton in terms of the luxury tax, but if we wanted to win, it would be a move in a better direction.

What are we giving up? Second rounders in the 30s? And by 30s I don’t mean draft position, I mean the 2030s.

Lol, the ole "scorched earth" trade idea.

Jazz get Collins, Smart, and Grant
Celtics get Conley
Hawks get Rudy
Pistons get Bogdan Bogdanovic, Schroder, Boston 2022 1st, Atlanta 2022 1st

Celtics go nuts if they get Conley for Smart/Schroder and throw a 1st at Detroit.

Hawks go nuts if they get Rudy and throw a 1st at Detroit. They actually save money and put the best screener with Trae.

Pistons are happy to get a good rotation player in Bogdan and two 1sts. They turn around and trade Schroder to Dallas for more picks.

We completely change what we do, go more defensive overall as a team, and get much younger. Don, Smart, Grant, Bojan and Colllins would be exciting...

Utah sends a first to Sacramento... Boston sends a second or two to Sacramento.

I'd still bring Smart off the bench and start House. He gets the nominal start and plays 15-20 minutes. Smart closes. I'm not convinced Bogey vs. Barnes is some great improvement but this helps us mitigate risk that Bogey's finger stops working.

Boston gets away from the two big lineups and saves a little next year... doubt they were going to waive Horford as they won't be able to clear cap space. They gets some shooting.

Sacramento needs a starting center to supplement Holmes... they also need a winner and a vet. Royce gets them a 3 and D guy on a decent deal. They get a first for their trouble. Bagley is more salary filler than anything. They supposedly were offered 2 first for Barnes last year but that is the price of keeping him an extra year. They don't abandon their stupid run at the 10th seed but get some forward looking value. Cap space smap space... ain't no one want to play there... they give up some cap space but nbd.

Deal also shaves 4M from the books once you replace a roster spot and so we get some serious tax savings.

Rudy goes no where in trade unless we are getting back a true tier 1 player along with multiple assets. That is scorched earth because nothing will ever grow in that earth again.

Hahaha. I know. Rudy goes nowhere. Would be selling at an absolute high, but yeah, it won't happen at this time.
