The fact that only 1 out of every 3 first-round picks becomes a solid player is just further evidence that the Jazz need more picks. Ainge drafted Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart and Robert Williams. However, he also drafted Aaron Nesmith, Romeo Langford, James Young, RJ Hunter and some other duds. Even teams that are good at drafting need multiple swings to get a hit, they need to be willing to take big swings on upside despite risk, and they need to get a bit lucky with their draft position and other circumstances.
The Jazz took a swing on Gobert because they had an extra pick. It was a low-risk, high-reward situation. People thought Gobert had potential, but no one could say he'd become 3x DPOY and All NBA. A small-market team like the Jazz needs to build through the draft, and more picks means more bites at the apple.
IMO, the Jazz should want to make 10 picks in the next 3 drafts if they can. At least 5 of those picks should be wings.
