Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

On the Hoops Collective podcast, MacMahon thinks a deal with the Jazz and Knicks gets done before the season starts and Windhorst doesn't think they will be able to come to an agreement before the season. They also discussed a hypothetical deal between the Jazz and Lakers, the money works for a Westbrook and THT for Bogey, Conley, Clarkson and Beverley trade...MacMahon and Bontemps think the Lakers would have to give up both of their 1sts in that deal and Windhorst thinks they would only have to give up one of them.
If Ainge is trying to recreate the KG/Pierce deal to Brooklyn… the Lakers trade is it.

I hope both of these deals get done before training camp… would be nice to not have rumors all season and get a nice clean break.

The stories about how some in NY would rather keep Grimes instead of RJ are interesting. He’s an easier player to fit both on court and for cap flexibility. I go back and forth on RJ but if we could get 3 unprotected picks and RJ I’d be happy to pay him and find out what he becomes. He’s clearly a hard worker and plays a position that even if he isn’t an all star could be worth a lot of money.

8-9 extra picks, some high picks the next two years, and RJ isn’t a horrible start to a rebuild.

It's probly going to cost the Lakers a FRP to move off Westbrook. I can't see us doing all of Bogey, Conley, Clarkson and Beverley for one additional pick.

Bingo Bogey, Clarkson, and probably Bev are for sure worth a Royce O'Neale level FRP on their own, the idea that they would only fetch one collectively is absurd.
A distant Lakers pick isnt just a random 1st round pick tho.

Plus you wont get a lot of teams willing to give up 1st right now. You going to have to wait til the trade deadline when the competition landscape is more clear.

Still for taking all four of these guys it should problably cost two, AND a swap.

Only Bogey has true first value. Everyone else is more like 2 second rounders type value

If you get lucky at the deadline maybe you can get a first for Clarkson.

Knicks doing a lowball.

The Jazz and Knicks are in discussions on a trade that would send Donovan Mitchell to New York, according to sources. A deal is not considered imminent yet, but the Knicks are motivated to acquire Mitchell and have proposed new packages to Utah’s new front office led by CEO Danny Ainge.

New York made a recent offer of Evan Fournier, Obi Toppin, additional salary and two unprotected first-round draft picks (five total), league sources tell me and The Athletic’s Tony Jones. The Jazz’s asking price has been more significant than that.

Mitchell has three guaranteed years left on his contract, allowing the Jazz to bring him into the upcoming campaign and take a patient approach to trade discussions. The Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards have been among the teams interested in Mitchell as well, sources said.

I can see why no deal has happened yet. Knicks still low-balling us. Toppin, filler, 2 real firsts, and three protected junk firsts.

LOL. GTFO, Knicks. If that’s their best offer, I’d take three unprotected and better players to flip from someone else.

If Knicks are serious, throw in Grimes, unprotect a third pick, and take back Rudy Gay.

Geez Louise you guys. It was a mistake. Lol this is the most excited I’ve ever been for a 49ers season, they had been on my mind, I was walking into work typing that on my phone, it’s hard for me to type and walk. Lol
Or chew gum. Doing stuff is hard!

Think of this as setting the floor for a deal. This is the floor. This has already been offered and the Jazz have not accepted it - Toppin, McBride and Fournier(they need those 3 to make the salaries work) + 5 1sts(2 unprotected). The Jazz can always get this offer if they want it.

Now the Jazz should be trying to convince NYK that another team is offering something they prefer over that offer so they make the Knicks up their offer.

If they simply switch it to 3 unprotected Knick picks and 2 other first rounders with the same players, then the deal would probably happen.

Add Quickley, sub 1 protected first for an unprotected first, and add a swap of the Minny 23 or Philly 23 pick for the Knicks pick. We aren't quite in the deal zone but we are approaching it.

24/26/28, a swap in 23, Quickley/Toppin/Fournier, a couple protected picks is the place I can see Danny saying "okay fine". Sneak a Gay for Reddish deal in there as the final bullet point.

this won't work for NYK. Part of the reason they are trying so hard to limit the number of unprotected is so they will have some number of picks available for future trade. 24/26/28 leaves them with just 1 pick they can use next year or the year after. IMO they would rather do 23/25/27 with pick swap either in 24 or in 26. Of course the Jazz would push for 26 IMO. This would allow them to have 2 of their own picks to trade in 24 for another star + possibly another pick if they keep the MKE pick.

If I had to guess the final deal is something like...

23/25 NYK unprotected, NYK 27 top 5 protected
2 of the other picks(very likely they would rather keep the MKE pick)
Toppin, Quickley, filler.

You'd kick off the rebuild with one high lotto pick plus 3 others in 2023, you'd then have two+ picks every year for the next 6 years to work with... nothing is guaranteed, but you've got a great chance. Plus whatever you can do with renting space and sifting for diamonds.

We all will have to find joy in watching the young guys grow for a few years... it will be rough at times but the payoff should be great.
