How Bad will the Jazz Defense Be This Year?

I dont think losing is starting to wear on the team at all. The team has a winning record. The team just beat a top ranked Western Conference team twice in a row.

I just think the Jazz arent a very good road team and they arent a team who can overcome injuries to their key players.
We lost badly to a team without their two best players one being a yearly mvp candidate and made Portia look like an allstar.

And the defense is getting worse by the game, you’re wrong. Watch the effing games you idiot!! We are starting to really suck and hard. We couldn’t stop tumble weed blowing down the lane for a wide open layup. Lol

And the defense didn’t start out this bad to start the year, hell it was one of the better defenses over the first month. A month ago we had the best record in the west, and now we are damn near 500. When do you think losing will start wearing this team down? Idiot!!

Over the last 10 game stretch we are the 19th ranked defense vs the 25th ranked for the season....

It's a league wide trend that offenses have gone up as the season has gone on.

I though we would be a bit better on defense. The two things that have surprised me are the rebounding (maybe that shouldn't have been a surprise) and also the lack of turnover creation. With Vanderbilt and Olynyk I thought we'd deploy more of a pressing style that relies on creating turnovers, but we're playing more of a traditional defense that's doing a good job of forcing the right shots. Despite being ranked 27th, we aren't allowing a lot of Morey shots. With the more traditional scheme, it's no surprise we have so much more success with Kessler in the game.

Gregg Popovich says the NBA should create a 4-point and 5-point line to create ‘real circus’ because no one wants to play defense anymore.... so truth !!
Pop approaching "Old man yells at cloud" territory. NBA defenses have never been as good as they are now.

Just take a look at some 80's (or even 90's) games. Oh my god. The defense is laughable compared to today.

It's all just old guy nostalgia.

Here are the defensive metrics I posted in the OP, but for this season so far:

There are some really interesting numbers in here.

- Gay with unbelievably good defensive numbers and Simone with unbelievably bad defensive numbers. Did losing Gay make us a much worse defensive team, or did we just happen to become a worse defensive team when Gay got injured and it's messing with the numbers?
- As already discussed on this board, the Vanderbilt numbers are real bad.
- Lauri is having his best defensive season of his career. The offensive load he's taken on is pretty incredible, but to improve his defense this much is really remarkable.
- Our best defensive players tend to be our worst offensive players.
- Sexton with good individual defensive impact, but bad team defensive impact.
- Ochai and NAW haven't played enough real rotation minutes to include them, but I was curious so looked them up as well.
Here are the updated individual defensive metrics:

- Jared Vanderbilt's numbers haven't improved much. I had hoped they would start looking better by now.
- Mike Conley's defense has been really bad since coming back from injury by the eye test and the numbers confirm it.
- Ochai and NAW's numbers are coming down to earth a little since getting more minutes, but still look pretty good.
- Lauri continues to be our only real two way player. All of our best defenders are bad offensive players.

I don't think Kessler is a bad offensive player. More like neutral. I mean he is shooting 72.4% from the field for the season.

The worst point is having 3 starters in the worst defender cat. I can understand for Mike as he is our best playmaker by far but as long as Vando and KO will remain starters , we won't be good.

Hardy could try to balance out the lineups a little bit better. Honestly Kessler for Vando would probably do the trick for the starting lineup.

Just looked this up and the normal starting lineup has an offensive rating of 112 and a defensive rating of 113 (actually much better than I expected). The same lineup with Kessler for Vando has an offensive rating of 124.6 and a defensive rating of 89.1, although they have only played 26 total minutes together.

4 of the bottom 5 are starters. This is why I liked the Collins trade. He is a positive on both ends and would have enabled us to run Kessler more, benching 2 of our bottom 3 defenders.

Rudy Gay's defensive numbers continue to be absurd. You can talk about positioning, length and experience as much as you want, but the guy is also not closing out anyone AND is still getting blown by regularly. That's hard to do if you're actually giving some effort.

At the All Star break we are the 26th rated defense in the NBA.

Defensive Rating Per Player so Far:
Rudy Gay - 104.9
THT - 110.1
Kessler - 112.6
Agbaji - 113.5
Lauri - 114.1
Olynyk - 116.5
Sexton - 116.5
Clarkson - 117.1
Fontecchio - 121.1
I think its pretty obvious our problems are in defending opposing starters. We have no great PoA defenders and decent ones dont cut it against top guards of most teams.

Kesslers numbers were way better as well when he played more backup minutes against 2nd stringers, which also supports that.
