What's new

Kendall Marshall - Our next PG Hope

I just don't understand why people look at his athletic weaknesses and assume he can't excel as a pg in the NBA. In today's NBA the game has changed because we have a bunch of players who are all athlete and have no clue how to play the correct way, and have 0 b-ball IQ. Many of these pg's will have a leg up in athletic ability, but Marshall will have a leg up in physicality, and playing fundamental basketball.

Every time I hear an arguement against Marshall, it further convinces me Marshall will be a very good player for years and years to come. Everyone is completely discounting what's upstairs and only the physical attributes.

Let's look at my favorit football player of all time from back in the day, the great Jerry Rice. Many in football and in the press consider him not just the best wr of all time but the best football player of all time. Why? It's not his size not his speed, but what was inside.

Because of lack of size and speed he was past over by 16 teams, and may have gone lower had the 49ers not traded up to the 17th pick to get him in the draft. Jerry worked harder and longer then anyone, and had such a fear of failure that it drove him to be the best. Marshall's potential doesn't lie in his physical attributes but in his mental attributes. That is what I see, that's why I like him so much.

I'm not saying he will be the best ever. What I do see is he has what it takes to be a great pg if he reaches his potential.

Draft him and send him to Stockton for a summer to cultivate the potential I speak of.

I think Marshall will have to go to the right team to succeed. Obviously you can't stick him on the Kings and expect him to do good. I think the Jazz could be that team though if they add another competent wing player (Sign Batum? Draft Miller?).

Actually he might be what the Kings need to change the ugly culture going on there right now

Why do people assume that everything is black and white?

Why do you assume that athletic players can't/aren't as smart as Marshall?

To me, why not draft someone that is athletic AND capable of running our offense?

1. Most assume Marshall can't play because you assume his only attribute is passing sounds like a black and white comment to me.

2. I never said all athletic players are not smart.

3. Why not draft a player with the top pg skills in the draft, skills which are elite to run the offense.

1. What other attributes does he have? That's all I've heard is his smarts. Nothing else.

2. That's what was inferred.

3. Because the NBA is one quick game. Marshall's lack of a shot, inability to create, reluctance to score, and average athleticism are concerning. No evaluation that I've seen, whether it be on nbadraft.net or draftexpress, gives me confidence that these negatives outweigh his positives.

I think draftexpress has him being picked at #19 for a reason. Lets not waste our lotto pick for someone who deserves a late 1st round pick.

I'm sorry, but playmaking for NC needs to be taken into consideration... He's throwing the ball to Harrison Barnes. I could look pretty damn good playing PG for Carolina.

To me, I think I'd be more interested in Damien Lillard than Marshall. I know I know, he didn't play at that cool powder blue school, but he might be the better prospect. Better athletic ability, far better shot, good leader, solid floor general, unstoppable in the P&R, and has the potential to be an elite defender. Think Tony Parker.

Marshall definitely creates. I don't know how he could average 10 apg without creating anything. He drives and dishes. Even though he isn't great at finishing or super quick, he does get in the lane. Even though he isn't great at finishing, people still have to challenge him like he is going to shoot and he always finds the open man with a strike.

Yes.

He's a great passer. That will translate. Poor defense and poor shooting will also translate.

I think we're ALL largely on the same page.

He plays at UNC. I could average 10 apg there.

Again, I think there's a reason why most mocks have him going outside of the lottery.

And again, his lack of athleticism is going to give us hell defensively.

His shooting is going to hurt us too.

I really don't think he's a good fit... Nor do I think he should be taken with a lotto pick.

I don't think his weaknesses outweigh his positives.

Lol. They have a backup PG who does nothing when he comes in the game. I doubt it's that easy.

Ok ok, fine.

You can easily see how some people on this board have made up their mind.

I've brought up points and I keep hearing the same ol same ol. No one ever bothers to refute points anymore. They just keep on goin like a broken record.

Waste a lotto pick on this joke. But there are a number of red flags here.

He's averaging 7 points and 3 turnovers. He's shooting percentage SUCKS. 43 % and 31 % and 71 %... If you aren't concerned with these, then I don't know what to say.

Ever single scouting report mentions his lack of athleticism. And the eye-ball test leads me to know that he'll never be much of a defender at the NBA level.

So that's fine guys. You win. Marshall plays at Carolina and will obviously be a HOF. Jazz should trade Harris (such a crappy PG. Damn fool can't even average 30 points per game!) for this sure bet.

Don't let any facts get in the way of your opinions. Marshall is cool and his shooting stats should just be ignored. Favors and Kanter will always clean up his messes. That's how defense is always played, right? Your PGs can suck and your bigs clean up messes and DON'T leave themselves vulnerable to be burned....

With hand checking rules, yes, that is pretty much how defense is played.

No. It also involves staying in front of your man. Getting into passing lanes. On the ball pressure.

Oh and nice job avoiding the shooting stats. Gotta love how you pick and choose which points to respond to.

I think when people do this, it reveals that they're less concerned with properly evaluating a prospect and more concerned with their own reputation.

If one were to really evaluate this kid, wouldn't you take into consideration his shooting stats? This is basketball and shooting is kinda important in this sport.

Thriller, I don't think you're reading what these guys are saying. They keep on bringing up points and you keep on saying the same 'ol same 'ol too. I think a lot of us are just sick of this because we've discussed Marshall for almost 30 pages now, everything that could be said has been said.

Is there a way of changing this thread's title to "Damian Lillard - Our next PG Hope"?

- Marshall will be a reach at picks #10-14
- Rivers will stay in school
- Wrotten is crap (according to PKM and I don't mind taking his word for it)

Doesn't that realistically leave us with Lillard?

I hope more energy is spent on this thread discussing his attributes....

Lillard is good.

How about another one on Marshall's defense:
How do the Dallas Mavericks, with a 39 year old Jason Kidd, beat OKC, with a super athletic Westbrook, last year in the play offs?
Yes, Mavs had Chandler but Dirk's a terrible defender and OKC has Ibaka and Durant too.
NBA defense is team defense.

Marshall's shooting is awful, we've discussed that. He still managed to get 29 points and 20 points in a game....but his shooting won't be fixed until he fixes how much lift and body to use on his shot.
