Archie, I don't think I'm disagreeing with you that strength is important as a physical skill to play basketball. I do disagree that the sole test of how many 185 pound bench presses can a player do is at all valuable in determining a) whether a player is strong in the kind of ways that are important for NBA play or b) whether a player will succeed at the NBA level.

Why do you think this particular test has any predictive power at all?

I wonder if they do the bench press the same day they do the agility test? That would explain why they don't do squats, because it would hurt the performance #'s of their agility and athletic testing.

I think what Archie is trying to say is that the information is important, because it's information on the player. All information is important. To say that the bench press has no importance at all is just ridiculous. Yes, if you have a player as skilled as KD, you overlook it. If you are drafting with later picks, maybe you see a SF who is a senior and still can't bench 185. That would be cause for concern and may sway you from not picking him in favor of a more physically developed player who may be slightly less skilled.

This. It's an important part in measuring an aspect in a player's fitness and athletic testing. To write it off as unimportant is dumb. It's also dumb to rely too much on it.

I can promise I'm not the list bit riled up and never get there on a message board. Everything I do and say is in good fun. Too many other things in life that piss me off to come here for that.
