It's impossible to predict all of the consequences that would have resulted if the transaction hadn't happened, but feel free to speculate.
Mine would be the Jazz signing Gail Goodrich in 1976. Under the free agency rules, the Jazz had to compensate the Lakers for signing a veteran free agent away from them. Part of the compensation was the Jazz's highest pick in the 1979 draft, which ended up being Magic Johnson. He could have brought his basketball skills and sleeping around ways to Salt Lake City.
