If You Could Take Back One Transaction in Jazz History...

First off, I know there's not much point to a thread like this, other than the board is slow and there's not a lot of news to discuss. That said, if you could take back one Jazz transaction, what would it be? It's impossible to predict all of the consequences that would have resulted if the transaction hadn't happened, but feel free to speculate.

Mine would be the Jazz signing Gail Goodrich in 1976. Under the free agency rules, the Jazz had to compensate the Lakers for signing a veteran free agent away from them. Part of the compensation was the Jazz's highest pick in the 1979 draft, which ended up being Magic Johnson. He could have brought his basketball skills and sleeping around ways to Salt Lake City.

Tag's big deal and AK's big deal.

They tie

Those were both pretty bad. It would've been nice if the amnesty clause from the last CBA could've been used in a period covering multiple seasons. Of course, LHM may not have allowed the Jazz to use it on AK anyway.

Despite all of the apologists saying otherwise, I'd contend that there were reasonable deals available for AK but we overvalued our own hype of his potential. So yes, I'd agree that we would have never amnestied him.

The Dominique Wilkins trade has to be on the list somewhere. The Jazz were hamstrung & I don't know how much blame can be placed on management/ownership, but in hindsight that's one of the most lopsided trades in the history of the NBA.

I like all the choices but mine would have been the Dantley trade. I think Frank Layden said he regretted making the trade out of spite. I think the Jazz could have won a championship with AD, Malone and Stockton.

Yeah the first reponses suprised me a little. I'd say the Wilkins trade or the Lakers trade that landed them Magic Johnson.

Yeah that was a pretty awful trade. This got me wondering as to why Dominique didn't want to play in Utah. I found something very recent about it. https://washington.cbslocal.com/201...-wilkins-joined-the-sports-junkies-in-studio/

At that time, let me tell you the reason I didn’t want to go there. They said the reason why they were going to draft me is they wanted me to play the Power Forward and Adrian Dantley to play Small Forward. I’m like ‘Ain’t no way that I was playing Power Forward!’. In the league in those days, that was suicide. I wasn’t playing Power Forward.

If that was really the main reason, couldn't it have been resolved?

Wilkins trade....how is this even a debate?

It's not really a debate. It's just a question. I personally would take back the Gail Goodrich signing.

EDIT: Just to expound on it not being a debate, rather than taking back what you think is the worst transaction, someone could take back the one they think would have the most interesting consequences.

In 83 we could have drafted Clyde Drexler but we enjoyed listening to the pipes of Thurl Bailey instead...

I am really good at this hind sight thing...

Interesting consequences? Hmm...it would have been interesting to see if we could have actually built a contender around Williams if AK hadn't been hogging all the cap space.

Would that make Clyde a Mormon?

I wish LHM would have bought the Jazz from NO instead of Sam Battistone because the Jazz wouldn't have had to send Dominique Wilkins to the Hawks. I think a big three of Malone, Stockton and Wilkins would have been enough to get a few rings in SLC.
