What's new

You heard it hear first... Trade/Offseason prediction thread!

It is only one year though, so it's not like we are going to re sign him to the same contract. I think we ought to be focusing on our future big guys though, and just get them a back up, maybe in free agency, or maybe in the draft.

So you're okay with killing the greatest share of our potential if it's only one year you're killing? What about two?

He's a $19 Million dollar expiring contract that has won a championship. I'd much rather have him than Big Al or Sap back, although I do agree that he kills a lot of our potential moves. I think Houston would probably be willing to give up more than we would though.

make it your mantra.

I really dont think it kills it as much as you think. There are 96 minutes to be played at the big man spot, and between three players that is 32 minutes a game. I think that Favors needs to start, but at this point, Kanter just needs to get lots of minutes. I am sure that Gasoft will be injured at at least some point in the season, and then maybe we have a rookie and Jeremy Evans get like 15 min per game each.

The key to the deal if we get Gasol will be what else we get with him. If we are able to get another first round draft pick, or a young guy in a good deal, then I am ok with it. I know the Lakers dont have much to give, but a future first is not terrible, and they might be able to swing a sweet three team deal to get us something good just to get rid of their salary cap issues.

it's not all about minutes + what we have to give up for him.

It's about how he demolishes our cap space. Demolishes.

By the way, there's a minimum salary floor, now, so the Jazz, or any other franchise, can't be "cheap."

How many times do we have to go over this?

yeah they can, they just have to split the remaining money up between their players on contract at the end of the season. like a bonus. They would probably make trades mid season to absorb salary anyway, and get some assets in the process.

It's true though, they can't be cheap. No, they don't have to actually sign players up to the minimum payroll, but they'll be surcharged the difference if they're below. Either way, they'll have to pay at least 90% of the cap to their players.

What are you going to use the cap space for this offseason anyway? There is not a free agent out there other than Chris Paul that I would want to spend our money on this year. Not even Dwight Howard. We will have the cap space next year, when there might be a better free agent, or we can absorb more salary to get a pick in a loaded draft.

I am curious as to what you want to save the salary cap room for though? Please explain.

holy ****. How can you know this, and then also advocate for Gasol.

Go add Gasol's salary to the current commitments. Then, make a reasonable guess about other moves to fill out the roster. Then, come back and see if you can still advocate for Gasol.

But that does not mean they should just spend in the offseason, there is always the trade deadline they can use as well.

you're confusing the dog**** out of me. One post is RIGHT ON. The next is WHIFFFFF.

haha, you too. I think we are saying the same thing on a lot of things. I am not advocating getting Pau Gasol just to get Pau Gasol. If it is the right deal and we get an asset, then why not? But if there is a better deal out there like you proposed in the other thread, then let's go for that. I just don't think any deal for Gasol kills us as much as you are saying. It only does if we don't get something good besides Gasol in return, or if Kanter/Favors don't get minutes because of it.

What else would we get with Gasol? Is there a third team? I don't see anything else on the Laker roster that I'm interested in, and I don't want their future picks.

I think I would only take Gasol at the trade deadline if there are no other deals out there that would give us a better piece. That way, he is only eating up the cap space in a time we can't use it anyways, and we preserve the cap space for the next season, when the pressure of the new CBA has had another season to wear teams down, they might be willing to give up more to get out from under it.

I don't see anything either right now, but you never know what will happen in the offseason with other teams, or three way trades. I think we agree on one thing, that Gasol is only worth it if we work a good asset out of it as well, as that is what we could expect from other teams in a deal for our salary cap space.

I'd agree to take Gasol at the deadline......... only if all other deals fell through.......... and only if we had a chance at winning something.........

Agreed. Try to get free agents you want; if you can't, fill the roster cheaply and hope something opens up approaching the trade deadline.

I agree about this, exept for the winning something thing. I don't care if they win anything at all next year, except the lottery. The real exciting time for me comes in the next few years, when hopefully we are contending for a championship.

So.... in what scenario do you imagine acquiring Gasol helps us win the lottery? In other words, if you don't care about winning games, then how do you build any case for acquiring Gasol?
